Maruti Alto loses No 1 title after 13 years – Dzire becomes best selling car of India

Before Alto became India’s no 1 selling car, it was the Maruti 800 which was India’s best selling car. And now, for the first time in the history of India’s auto industry, a sedan has replaced small hatchbacks as the best selling car of India. This shows how buyer preference has changed over the years.

First, it was the mini car 800 which was India’s favourite. It was aspired by millions. The next gen aspired for Alto range, which was a little more spacious and expensive than the 800. And now, from Alto, the aspiration of majority has shifted towards larger, and more premium / expensive cars. This has resulted in Dzire becoming the best selling car of India.

Maruti Alto ruled the sales charts for 13 consecutive years. But its reign, has come to an end. For 2018, Maruti Dzire sales stand at 247,815 units while that of Alto stand at 231,540 units. Dzire has beaten Alto by a little over 16k units. Dzire monthly average sales stood at 22,528 units while that of Alto stood at 21,049 units. (sales calculated from Jan to Nov 2018).

Compared to the Alto, which is priced in the range of Rs 2.7 lakhs to Rs 3.9 lakhs, the Dzire is priced in the region of Rs 5.6 to 10 lakhs. This shows how the buyer preference has moved to a completely new segment in India.

Dzire has been the country’s most favored compact sedan ever since it was introduced in 2007. The new DZire sub 4 meter sedan is based on a new platform making it longer, wider and more spacious than its earlier counterpart. It also receives state of the art features with more leg and head room for passengers at the rear.

Maruti DZire is powered by petrol and diesel engine options mated to 5 speed manual transmission as well as AMT offering best in class fuel efficiency. It competes with the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Tigor and Volkswagen Ameo.
