India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has introduced its first electric car for India, the eVitara. Last year, the eVitara was unveiled for European markets in Milan, Italy. Maruti eVitara will be manufactured in India and exported to various global locations.

A brand new HEARTECT-e platform has been used for Maruti eVitara. This platform is specially developed for electric cars and is likely to be used for new EV models in the future. Some of the key highlights of the HEARTECT-e platform include an advanced setup with high-voltage protection and a lightweight structure.

The platform is designed to maximize battery capacity and ensure spacious interiors. Dimensionally, Maruti eVitara is 4,275 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall. Wheelbase is 2,700 mm, whereas ground clearance is 180 mm.

Maruti eVitara – Exteriors, interiors

With the eVitara, Maruti has focused on achieving a brawny profile that ensures a powerful road presence. Some of the key features include LED headlamps, unique 3-piece LED DRLs, a rugged-looking bumper section and a sculpted bonnet. Side profile is distinguishable with its polygonal wheel arches, thick body cladding, door moulding, blacked-out B pillar and C-pillar mounted rear door handles.

Road presence is further enhanced with 18-inch wheels available with the top variant. Maruti eVitara has sporty alloy wheels that are designed to reduce air drag. The slightly tapering roofline further enhances the overall look and feel. At the rear, eVitara has a shark fin antenna, a prominent roof-mounted spoiler, a heavily raked windshield and edgy wraparound taillamps. A chunky rear bumper complements the overall rugged profile of the SUV.

Inside, Maruti eVitara utilizes a dual-tone theme. There are some unique features such as squarish AC vents with chrome accents and a 2-spoke steering wheel. The latter is a first for a Maruti car. Other key highlights include dual 10.1-inch screens, ventilated front seats, 10-way powered driver’s seat, sliding rear seat bench, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charger and automatic climate control.

A comprehensive range of connectivity features are available. Safety kit is quite good, offering Level-2 ADAS, seven airbags as standard, electronic parking brake with auto hold, electronic stability control, ventilated disc brakes and a 360° camera.

Maruti eVitara – Performance, range

Users can choose from battery pack options of 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Variants with the smaller battery pack are available in only 2WD format. With the larger battery pack, users have the option to choose the ALLGRIP-e 4WD system. Power output is 145 hp and 189 Nm with the 2WD variants and 184 hp and 300 Nm with the 4WD variant. There are three driving modes too.

Users can expect good acceleration, as needed during the startup run and while overtaking. Maruti eVitara will primarily challenge Hyundai Creta Electric which has been launched at The Bharat Mobility Global Expo. While Creta is ahead in the ICE segment, it will be interesting to see who wins the EV race. Other rivals include Tata Curvv EV and MG ZS EV.
