Maruti Gypsy will not be replaced – Jimny SUV will not launch in India

Following official launch of 2018 Suzuki Jimny in Japan, Suzuki has also confirmed that the new Jimny will be making its way to Indonesia. This fourth generation Jimny was on display at 2018 GIIAS.

It will also be built in Indonesia from where it will be making its way to other ASEAN countries. At that time, it was reported that India could be one of the markets where the Jimny could be launched. But that is not the case. Maruti Suzuki has confirmed to Zigwheels that they have no plans of launching the Jimny in India for now.

This means, there will be no replacement of the current Maruti Gypsy, which is in fact the 2nd generation Jimny for global markets. Gypsy in its current form will be discontinued from the company lineup by 1st Oct 2019. This is because it does not meet the new Bharat NCAP safety crash test norms. Those cars which do not meet India’s crash test norms, cannot be sold post 1st Oct 2019. This is one reason why it was being reported that the Gypsy will be replaced by Jimny.

2018 Suzuki Jimny is offered in three variants – XG, XL and XC while the Jimny Sierra is presented in two trims of JL and JC. Each of these variants gets color options of Jungle Green, Medium Grey, Blue Black Pearl, Silky Silver Metallic, Spare White and Pure White Pearl. The top end variants get dual tone options of Kinetic Yellow, Chiffon Ivory and Blyisque Blue Metallic which contrasting black roofs and ORVMs.

In Japan, Suzuki Jimny is priced JPY 14,58,000 for the standard model and at JPY 20,19,600 for top end Jimny Sierra JC (Rs 9.02-12.46 lakhs). The new Jimny comes in with better off roading features, performance upgrades and an even more powerful engine.

Measuring 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width and 1,725mm in height, the Jimny sits on a 2,250mm long wheelbase. It gets ground clearance of 205mm. Dimensions on the Jimny Sierra are larger at 3,550 mm length, 1,645mm width, 1,730mm height and a 2,250mm long wheelbase. Ground clearance is also higher at 210mm.

Exteriors of Suzuki Jimny are seen with LED head and tail lamps, headlamp washers and a 5 slot front grille in matte black. It also gets boxy wheel arches, a massive front bumper design and sits on 16” 5 spoke alloy wheels. Interiors get a host of safety features and latest in infotainment.
