Maruti Ignis export variant crash tested – Gets 3 star safety rating

Maruti Ignis crash test

Made in India Suzuki Ignis for Africa has achieved three stars for Adult Occupant Protection in the frontal crash test at 64km/h. The midway rating comes with a vehicle structure that’s rated as unstable. The vehicle offers weak chest protection for the driver.

Driver and passenger head and neck protection was ascertained as good. Passenger’s chest protection is ascertained as adequate. Driver knees get marginal protection and could ‘impact in dangerous arear behind the facia supported by the transfacia tube’.

Passenger knees protection is found to be adequate. The unstable bodyshell is not capable of withstanding further loadings. The footwell area is considered stable. While Ignis features driver SBR as standard, it does not meet Global NCAP requirement. Watch the crash test video of Maruti Ignis below.

From a maximum point scale of 17.00, Maruti Ignis scored 9.99 for adult protection. For child safety it scored even lower at a max of 8.00 on a total of 49.00. Safety equipment in the Maruti Ignis include front seatbelt pretensioners, driver and front passenger frontal airbag, Isofix anchorages, and ABS (4 channel).

The vehicle tested is a 2019 RHD, 5-door compact hatchback with crash test weight of 1,092 kgs. Kerb weight remains at 860 kgs, same as Maruti Ignis sold in India. Diff in kerb weight and crash test wt is due to the addition of crash test dummies and equipment to record data. The car misses out on side body and side head airbags, and driver knee airbag. SBR fitted is discounted by NCAP. The vehicle tested was fitted with 2 airbags as standard. Below is the full crash test safety report of Maruti Ignis by Global NCAP.

Maruti Ignis sold in South Africa by Suzuki, comes with a 1.2 liter petrol engine which delivers 83 PS and 113 Nm. This is mated to 5 speed MT or AMT. It is the exact same engine and transmission option of the Ignis, which is on sale in India. In India, Ignis was sold along with a 1.3 liter diesel engine as well, but that was discontinued due to low demand. As of now, Ignis is only offered with petrol 1.2 manual and petrol 1.2 AMT options. Price ranges from Rs 4.87 lakhs to Rs 7.22 lakhs.
