Located in Kopra-Khargha area of Navi Mumbai, a Maruti Nexa dealership owned by Excel Autovista caught fire at around 5-15 AM on a Sunday morning. The Aditya Planet building in Sector 10, where the fire broke, has commercial property on the ground floor and residential flats on the floors above.
Thanks to alert citizens residing above, the fire brigade was alerted immediately. But, by the time help arrived, the fire which was small initially, now had engulfed the entire showroom. After two hours, and five fire brigade ambulances, the fire was finally doused.
Once the fire brigade officials entered the showroom to check for damage, they were not expecting damage to life. But sadly, there were two charred bodies that were recovered from the showroom. Identity of these two people is not yet ascertained. It is believed both were working as security guards at the showroom.
It is not clear why the two people did not manage to come out of the showroom once the fire broke. Was the showroom locked from outside? Owner of the showroom has been questioned in regards to the death and security arrangement of the dealership. Local police are currently investigating the incident, and are yet to ascertain what happened, or what caused the fire in the first place.
Maruti Suzuki, a company which is widely acclaimed as a small car specialist, had quite a few forgettable encounters in the premium end of the market such as the Grand Vitara and Kizashi. Not bogged down by the failures, the automaker came up with the Maruti Nexa outlets that exclusively retail the brand’s premium offerings. In the long term, the Nexa upmarket retail network would play a crucial role in Maruti gaining acceptance in the premium segment.
So far, the response for the Nexa strategy has been brilliant. The automaker has already opened 200+ Nexa outlets across India and with sales on the rise, even more are to open by the end of this year. Maruti Nexa dealerships currently sell Ciaz, Ignis Baleno and S-Cross.
