Maruti Nexa online ad claiming S Cross petrol price Rs 8.1 lakhs – Now removed (Update)

Maruti S Cross is the most expensive utility vehicle on offer by the company today. First launched in 2015, the S Cross came with 1.3 liter and 1.6 liter diesel engine initially. Last year, it got a facelift update. At this point, the 1.6 liter diesel engine was discontinued.

Today, the S Cross is only offered with a 1.3 liter diesel MultiJet engine sourced from Fiat. This is the same engine which also powers their other cars like Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ciaz, Ertiga. All this time, it has never been on offer with a petrol engine. There were always rumors that Maruti Suzuki is going to launch a petrol engine with S Cross, to rival the Hyundai Creta better. But that has not happened yet.

Thanks to automotive enthusiast and Team-BHP member Akshat, an interesting new detail has surfaced. If you search online for ‘Maruti S Cross petrol‘ – The first result that comes up in the google search is an ad by Maruti Nexa. When you click on this ad, it takes you to the official Maruti Nexa website, which confirms that the ad is by Maruti Nexa and not someone else.

But when you go to the Maruti Nexa page, there is no information mentioned about the Maruti S Cross petrol variant. All it mentions is about the current S Cross diesel 1.3 variant. So why is there an ad about the S Cross petrol variant, along with starting price of Rs 8.1 lakh? Did someone at Maruti accidentally publish the ad before official launch ahead of Diwali? Below is the ad which you can see online.

UPDATE – The ad has now been removed from google.

Though the ad said that the price starts from Rs 8.1 lakhs, which most likely is the starting price of the S Cross petrol, as the diesel S-Cross starts from Rs 8.6 lakhs. Coming to the speculation of which engine will be plonked under the S Cross petrol, our bet is on the new 1.5 liter petrol engine which will be launched later this month with the new Ciaz. (In addition to this, a 2016 report also said that there will be a 1.5 liter for S Cross.)

This engine is a a new generation engine by Maruti Suzuki. It delivers 104 PS power and 138 Nm torque. Mileage claim is expected to be 20+ kmpl. Transmission options on offer are manual as well as automatic. This new petrol engine will come with mild hybrid SHVS system. This also explains why the difference between petrol and diesel variant starting price is only Rs 50,000. Usually the petrol-diesel price difference in the segment is from Rs 1 – 1.5 lakh.

Hyundai Creta is the main rival to Maruti S Cross. Sales of Creta stands at about 10,000+ units a month, whereas that of S Cross stands at about 4,000 units a month. Creta is offered in both petrol and diesel engine, whereas the S Cross is only offered with diesel. With the launch of S Cross petrol, Maruti can surely hope of putting a dent in the sales of Hyundai Creta.
