Maruti sales decline 24.5 percent in May 2019 – 1.23 lakhs cars sold

For the month of May 2019, Maruti Suzuki India registered sales of 123,250. This when compared to sales registered in May 2018, when the car maker sold 163,200, is a decline by 24.5 percent. This is the largest decline in sales registered by Maruti Suzuki in recent years.

For the month of May 2019, all segments in which the company sells passenger cars, has registered decline. The only segment which has shown growth, is the commercial vehicle segment, in which Maruti offers Super Carry LCV. Sales of Super Carry grew from 1,703 units in May 2018 to 2,232 units in May 2019.

In the mini segment, which includes the Alto and old WagonR range (Maruti still sells the old WagonR to taxi fleet segment), sales declined to 16,394 units. This is a massive decline of 56.7% as compared to May 2018, when the company sold 37,864 cars. The decline is also because Maruti now calculates the new gen WagonR in the segment above, in which it sells the Swift, Baleno, etc. Below is the detailed sales report.

In the compact segment, which offers New WagonR2, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Dzire; Maruti registered sales of 70,135 units in May 2019, as against 77,263 sold in May 2018. This is a decline of 9.2%. Utility vehicles segment, which offers Gypsy, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, S-Cross; saw sales of 19,152 units in May 2019. In May 2018, this segment registered sales of 25,629 units, which is a decline of 25.3%. Vans segment, which offers Omni and Eeco registered drop in sales by 29.7%.

Suzuki Motors India operates the Gujarat plant as an independent unit. They have now started manufacturing the Baleno for Toyota as well, which will be launched as Glanza on 6th June 2019. Maruti has calculated the Glanza units under their sales report, which are recorded as “Sales to other OEM”. As per Maruti report, Suzuki produced 2,302 units of Glanza in May 2019.

Exports of Maruti Suzuki for May 2019 stood at 9,089 units as against 9,312 units exported in May 2018 – decline of 2.4%. Including exports, domestic sales and sales to other OEMs, Maruti reports total sales of 134,641 units in May 2019, as against 172,512 units in May 2018; registering 22% decline.
