Maruti Suzuki AMT models production capacity to be trebled to 12,000 units a month

Maruti Suzuki AMT models production to increase

For now, the company is doubling AMT production from 4,000 to 8,000 units a month.

Buoyed by the strong demand for Maruti Celerio and Alto K10 AGS (Automatic Gear Shift) models, the automaker is working on increasing the production capacity of the highly sought after variants. The company is increasing the AMT models’ production capacity from current 4,000 units to 8,000 units a month which could further be ramped up to 12,000 units a month.

Maruti Suzuki’s AMT supplier Magneti Marelli of Italy is currently setting up a production plant in Manesar to ease the automaker’s production constraints. The additional AMT capacity is absolutely necessary since the company is planning to introduce more AMT equipped models across the range.

More Maruti cars would receive AMT once the capacity constraint is eradicated.

With a fine balance between ease of use and affordability, AMT managed to effect a change in car buying paradigm, especially among urban customers. The strong demand for Celerio and Alto K10 AMT models indicate that Indians are more than ready to embrace the concept of clutchless driving.

An AMT, as the name suggests, is similar to a conventional manual transmission in terms of construction but the clutching and gear shifting actions are mechanized. This allows AMTs to operate with same efficiency as a manual unit as against a torque converter automatic which usually suffers from higher transmission loses.
