Maruti Suzuki plants at Manesar and Gurgaon to resume operations and production
Labor problems were still plaguing Maruti Suzuki till this morning. The on and off unrest for the past few months has once again come back to haunt the company. The Manesar unit of Maruti Suzuki is facing labor problems and as expected, the unrest spread to other units of the company which will include their diesel engine plant and two wheeler unit. These labor problems which have been going on since August 29 have caused the company much distress and loss and they have made alternative arrangements to bring in temporary staff and senior staff members to tide them over.
Over 3000 workers of Suzuki Powertrain India have been agitating against the management and workers of Suzuki Motorcycle India and Suzuki Casting also joined in support. Union leaders are pressing for their demands and all agitating workers are camping outside the company’s premises pressing for their demands.
Management of Maruti Suzuki wants all workers to sign a ‘good conduct’ bond. Mr. Shiv Kumar, general Secretary of Maruti Suzuki Employees Union said that if workers sign bonds their rights to expression would be hampered. In the mean time, Maruti Suzuki have manufactured 525 Swift vehicles and said that strike by other units did not have any effect on manufacturing.
With production at the Manesar and Gurgaon plants having suffered, Maruti saw stock prices suffer too. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. today announced that operations at both factories are likely to be fully functional soon a fraction of the striking workers have withdrawn their strike.
A Maruti Suzuki spokesman had this to say. “We are restarting production at both Manesar and Gurgaon on Sunday instead of Monday to make up for the production loss today.” The ongoing strike resulted in shortage of critical parts, and Maruti had to stop operations at their Gurgaon and Manesar plants. This said, there weren’t enough workers to ensure production at full capacity.
