Maruti Suzuki production halted temporarily due to fire at Subros plant

Subros fire impacts Maruti Suzuki production

Maruti is planning to source the AC kits from other Subros facilities.

Production at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar and Gurgaon plants have been halted from second half of yesterday due to a huge fire accident at the Subros’ Manesar plant. Subros is Maruti’s air conditioning kit supplier and the fire is reported to have inflicted heavy damage to the plant, machinery, and stock.

In a statement issued by Maruti Suzuki, the company revealed that it’s working with Subros to jointly assess the extent of the damage to essential equipment. The duo is also planning to source the AC kits from other Subros facilities. MSIL sources 60% of its AC kits from Subros.

The production halt comes when the demand for new products like the Baleno and Vitara Brezza are high.

The supplier’s Manesar facility is located near Maruti plant. According to eyewitnesses, the fire was aggravated by explosions of LPG cylinders in the storage. Subros has started reviving the plant but it will take a considerable amount of time to restore normalcy.

According to an internal Maruti circular intercepted by Economic Times, the production at both plants will remain shut till first half of today. The second shift is likely to be in operation but it’s unclear if Maruti has enough AC kit inventory to keep its production at the usual rate.
