WagonR Production Crosses 35 Lakh Units in India
Maruti Suzuki WagonR remains a long-running passenger car line within the domestic hatchback segment. This is now marked by cumulative India production of 35 lakh units. It has stood the test of time through multi-generation continuity, broad market presence, and sustained manufacturing scale.
Lifecycle progression reflects updates across the decades and regulatory alignment. Sales volume places WagonR among a handful of high-output passenger vehicles produced locally. Comparable milestone models within the portfolio include Alto and Swift.

Presence Across 75 Countries
Global origins trace back to Japan in September 1993. India launch occurred in December 1999, marking the beginning of local production and sales. Over time, market presence has expanded across Europe and other regions. Availability across more than 75 countries supports its big number game. As of August 2025, a crore units had been sold worldwide. India alone accounts for a 3rd of those numbers. India sales rankings places WagonR as the highest selling car across four financial years, based on domestic passenger car data.
The second generation reached in 2010, followed by third generation in 2019. A minor model change took place during 2022. Generational count stands at three, maintaining consistent body format while accommodating compliance and feature alignment.
Multiple Powertrain Paths Support Entry-Level Reach
Fuel and transmission options expanded gradually across years. Duo LPG entered the range in 2004. CNG availability followed in 2010. Auto Gear Shift joined the lineup in 2015, addressing automatic transmission demand within entry-level segments. Multiple fuel paths in India has supported large scale entry level adoption.
Safety equipment adoption followed Indian regulatory timelines. Dual airbags and ABS entered during 2015. Six airbags now apply as standard. ABS with EBD remains included across variants. Electronic Stability Program, branded ESP®, forms part of the current safety set without variant limitation.
HEARTECT Platform Underpins Success
Vehicle architecture rests on the fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. Platform use supports weight management, structural consistency, and manufacturing commonality. Shared platform strategy allows alignment across Suzuki model lines. Production efficiency remains linked to platform continuity across successive WagonR generations.
Infotainment provisioning includes SmartPlay Studio touchscreen integration. Display size measures 17.78 cm, equivalent to 7 inches. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ remain supported. Bluetooth connectivity and voice command functionality form part of the interface set offered within the cabin.
Gurgaon and Manesar Plants Handle India Output
Maruti Suzuki WagonR India production footprint covers multiple facilities and regions. India production operates from Gurgaon and Manesar plants located in Haryana. International manufacturing includes Japan, Hungary, and Indonesia. Multi-location production supports supply stability and market allocation across regions.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “This achievement is not just a production milestone, but reflects the enduring love and confidence that generations of customers have shown towards brand WagonR. It is rare for a vehicle to receive such acceptance even after 25 years since its launch. The WagonR kept evolving with the introduction of new technology and features over time, while retaining its original DNA.
The WagonR has been highly appreciated for aspects like its iconic tall-boy design, spacious interiors and fuel efficiency, which aptly reflect our customers’ needs and expectations. We are deeply grateful for their continued support and remain committed to providing ‘Joy of Mobility’ for generations to come.”
