Maruti Swift and Datsun Go crash test undertaken by Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme), has revealed some shocking results. Both have failed basic safety tests, and score a zero rating. This considering the fact that Maruti Swift is one of the best selling cars in India, easily selling in upwards of 17,000 units every month. The same car, in Europe gets 5 star safety rating by the same organization.
Based in the UK, Global NCAP is a non-profit organization, which promotes road safety awareness by providing effective crash test data to consumers. This is not the first time they had put Indian cars to test. Earlier this year, they had performed tests on base variants of five India made cars – Maruti Alto 800, Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10, and Volkswagen Polo. All these cars failed the test, and only after this, Volkswagen India made airbags as standard across all their variants. With airbags, Polo passed the test. Apart from Volkswagen India, other manufacturer did not make any changes to their cars. They continue to offer variants which are not equipped with basic safety features like Airbags and ABS.
Datsun Go front passengers risk fatal injuries during frontal crash at speeds of 64 kmph and above.Speaking about the recent crash, as is the norm, the crash took place at speed of 64 kmph on base variants of both Datsun Go and Maruti Swit.
