Maruti Swift sales decline, Hyundai i20 overtakes Baleno

Launched in India in October 2015, Maruti Baleno is aimed at competing with Hyundai Elite i20. Sales figures reveal that instead of bringing down sales of Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno has managed to bring down sales of Maruti Swift.

For the month of January 2016, Maruti Swift sales saw a 29% decrease from 19,669 units in January 2015 to 14,057 units last month. During the same month, Maruti Baleno sales stood at 7,689 units, a decline of about 25% when compared to sales registered in Dec 2015. This has resulted in Hyundai i20 regaining the No 1 position in the segment.

Apart from Baleno, other Maruti cars on the list also have reported a decline. Maruti Suzuki Alto which was at the No 1 registered a decline of 6% as sales fell from 22,889 units in January 2015 to 21,462 units in January 2016. On the second spot was DZire sedan, whose sales also dipped 3% from 18,155 units in January 2015 to 17,587 units in January 2016.

Third place was taken by Maruti Swift, while fourth place was WagonR. Sales of WagonR dipped marginally from 12,861 units in January 2015 to 12,744 units in January 2016. One Maruti car which posted positive sales was Celerio. Sales of Maruti Suzuki Celerio, in No. 9 position, stood at 7,141 units, up 48%.

Hyundai Motor India saw three models in the list of top 10 cars in January 2016. These are Hyundai Grand i10 registering 14% growth and 9,934 units sold during the month. Hyundai Elite i20 sales dipped 20% with 8,250 units sold while the two models were positioned at 5th and 6th position respectively. On 10th spot was Hyundai Creta with 6,589 units sold.
