The much sought after sub 4 meter SUV segment, which is mainly fought between Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport – saw a total of 1,67,369 units sold during the May to November 2019 period.

Launch of Hyundai Venue in May 2019 resulted in sales decline of Maruti Brezza. But Brezza sales gradually recovered. Over the last 6 months, Brezza emerged as top selling for 4 months, while for the remaining 2 months it was the Hyundai Venue. Speaking about the other three, Mahindra XUV300 has reported lowest sales for 3 months, Ford EcoSport for 2 months and Tata Nexon for 1 month.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza was in a first spot, with a total of 53,904 units. It can be noted from the accompanying table that sales of this sub 4 meter SUV has been steadily rising month after month except for July and August when sales dipped to 5,302 units and 7,109 units.

Sales took on again from September to enter the 10,000 unit segment and gaining in numbers over the past three months. The company now gears up for the launch of the Vitara Brezza facelift which will come in with a BS6 petrol 1.5 liter 103 hp engine, which also powers the Ciaz and Ertiga.

Hyundai Venue, the company’s first compact SUV, was the next top selling sub 4 meter SUV over the past 6 month period. Total sales stood at 53,873 units – losing out to the Maruti Brezza by just 31 units. It may be noted here that while sales have been gradually increasing, the months of July and August 2019, the same 2 months when Brezza sales dipped were when Venue sales increased to 9,585 units and 9,342 units respectively.

At No. 3 was the Tata Nexon with 20,506 units sold during the past 6 months. The first car in India with a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating has not seen much in terms of sales. A steady sales decline has been noted over the period in question with August and September sales at their lowest at 2,275 units and 2,842 units respectively. Year end discounts offered by the company has also failed to get much response from buyers while the company is now actively testing the Tata Nexon EV with an unveil planned for 19th December, 2019.

Ford EcoSport registered sales at 19,560 in the past 6 month period. Month-on-month Ford EcoSport sales data shows that while sales in the June and July period hovered around the 3,000 unit mark, sales in August dipped to 2,882 units while sales in September and October once again saw a revival to 3,139 units and 4,326 units respectively. However, sales in November dipped to 2,822 units.

XUV300 sales have been steadily reducing from a high of 5,113 units sold in May 2019 to 2,224 units sold in the past month. The company has just introduced the XUV300 BS6 petrol which gets a 1.2 liter turbo petrol engine that makes 110 bhp power and 200 Nm torque. The 1.5 liter turbo diesel engine offers 115 bhp power and 300 Nm torque with both engines mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox. The XUV300 BS6 is priced from Rs.8.30-11.84 lakhs.
