Maruti WagonR back as No 1 in segment – Tiago 3rd, Santro 4th in Jan 2019

Maruti Suzuki India Limited is a leader in almost every segment of cars, which are on sale below the Rs 10 lakhs mark. Among the top 10 best-selling cars in January 2019, there were 7 Maruti cars on the list.

In the mini segment, Alto is No 1, in the mid-sized hatchback segment, Maruti Swift and Baleno are ruling. In the MPV segment, Ertiga and Eeco are leaders. In the compact SUV segment, it is the Vitara Brezza which is No 1. In the small car segment too, Maruti has been a leader, thanks to WagonR and Celerio.

In Dec 2018, sales of Maruti WagonR declined to below 2,600. This was really low sales number, especially for a car which on average registers 15,000 monthly sales. But, the reason behind decline was stop of production. Yes, Maruti stopped producing the WagonR in 2018 Dec, to make way for 2019 WagonR.

With the 2019 WagonR now launched, Maruti is back in the lead. New WagonR noted sales to the extent of 10,048 units in January 2019, as compared to sales of 14,182 units in January 2018. This dip in sales was probably due to the fact that new WagonR was launched towards the end of last month, on 22nd January 2019. However, despite lower sales, the WagonR was still at the top in the segment. New WagonR was followed by another Maruti Suzuki model, the Celerio at No. 2 position on the list with sales increasing from 7,641 units in January 2018 to 9,217 units in January 2019.

Tata Tiago was at No. 3 on this list finishing even higher than the new Hyundai Santro. Sales of the Tiago dipped from 8,287 units in January 2018 to 8,041 units in the last month. From January 2019, the company is also offering ABS as a standard feature on all variants of Tiago and Tigor.

Hyundai Santro, launched in India late last year, saw sales at 8,000 units in January 2019. Renault managed to sell 4,712 units of the Kwid in January 2019, a significant dip in numbers as compared to 5,590 units sold in the same month of the previous year. Datsun GO sales however recovered marginally from 411 units sold in January 2018 to 422 units sold in the past month.
