Maruti confirms XA Alpha sub 4 meter SUV launch in 2016The Maruti Suzuki range currently spans over 12 models right from the entry level Alto 800 to the Ertiga MPV. With a target of selling 3 million units annually, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) wishes to increase number of models from 12-15 upto 25 which will also include an entry into the SUV and LCV segments.

As part of Maruti Suzuki strategy to increase sales and enter new segments in the passenger and commercial vehicle market, a new SUV to take on Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano in a few months time. This will be in the form of S Cross SUV which was on display at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.

After this, the company confirms that their second SUV will be in the form of sub 4 meter car, which will be launched in 2016. This will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, and yet to be launched compact SUVs from Mahindra, Tata, and Hyundai.

On the LCV front, Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce a 1 ton LCV to compete with Tata Ace, Mahindra Gio and Dost from Ashok Leyland in readiness of which the company is already in the process of setting up sales and service networks.

Maruti Suzuki market share has increased from 38.9% in the last year to 44.4 % as on date, and this in spite of having vehicles which cover 79% of the market. Now, with new SUVs planned, they expect to cover 100% of the market soon.

These extensive expansion plans will be boosted by a new plant coming up in Gujarat. By 2015-16, the company plants in Manesar and Gujarat will be working to full capacity, taking production up from a current 1.2 million units to 1.5 million units.
