Apprenticeship aims:
You will complete an Advanced Apprenticeship to enable you to complete the inspection and verification of components, to ensure adherence to specification.

Key Skills to be developed during the apprenticeship include:
• The use of hand inspection tools to ensure dimensional, mechanical and visual characteristics of components under instruction.
• The use of Laser etching equipment to identify components and track their use on the race car.
• The use of databases and software to track component status and use.
• Building technical drawings and developing understanding of specifications and tolerance intent.
• Understanding and knowledge of manufacturing processes and component use
• Use of a range of specialist gauges and equipment (Height, shadowgraph etc), to aid inspection and verification capability.
• To develop knowledge and application of component handling and packaging requirements to prevent component corrosion and prevent manual handling and transit damage.
• Identification and reporting of component non-conformance (NCR), including liaison with appropriate personnel to determine necessary and timely actions.
• Use of existing automated inspection programmes including CMM and other programmable devices.
• Understanding of more complex technical drawing specifications, and complete inspection using the appropriate techniques.

AERODYNAMICIST – REF: TG306/120612
A vacancy has arisen for an Aerodynamicist reporting to a Team Leader within the Aerodynamics department.

Responsible for Aerodynamic development projects from concept, CFD analysis, through design to wind tunnel testing. The primary focus of your work will be to find Aerodynamic performance.

Other responsibilities will include:
• Planning and running of development projects in the wind tunnel
• Integrating the available CFD resources into the design cycle
• Ensuring that wind tunnel results are reported clearly and accurately to your Team Leader
• Ensuring that planned release deadlines to the DO are met
• Liaising with component designers to get concepts turned into model components as required

Relevant Experience and Qualifications:
• Educated to Degree level, preferably Post graduate (in Aerospace or Aeronautical)

Mercedes AMG Petronas is looking for bright and motivated young engineers to join our graduate training program reporting to the Head of Mechanical Design. The successful candidate will provide design and engineering support within the Mechanical Design department and will have involvement in a wide range of car systems as well as having the opportunity to work closely with various departments within the team.

The main areas of responsibility will include design projects relating to a variety of suspension, steering, brake system & car control projects with increasing levels of responsibility being given as experience is gained.

This is an exciting opportunity to learn and gain experience in top flight motorsport allowing candidates to showcase their abilities and potential in a competitive environment.

Job Purpose:
Responsible for rig and fixture design within the R&D facility. The role will include defining test requirements and rig & fixture design. With experience, this may include some R&D performance component design. The engineer will see designs through from concept to assembly, overseeing tests and developing improvements where possible.

Key Accountabilities/Duties:
– Determining the requirements of the Drawing Office with regards to tests and fixtures required to test components with respect to the currently available facilities.
– Design and development of rigs and fixtures using CATIA V5 either from scratch or modifying existing fixtures where possible.
– Supervising the assembly of test fixtures and test assembly and overseeing tests when required.
– Assisting with various off site tests
– Liaison with external suppliers where appropriate during the concept and design of rigs.
– Monitoring the progress of parts through the system to ensure they arrive in time.

Key skills/experience:
– Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification.
– Experience of working in an engineering role in a racing environment would be advantageous.
– Must be comfortable with hand calculations and basic stress analysis.

COMPOSITE FITTER (VARIOUS SHIFTS) – REF: 2997
Vacancies have arisen for Composite Fitters, reporting to the Composite Shift Leader.

You will be responsible for manufacturing composite components by following engineering drawings and build manuals. Your other responsibilities will include:

Production: Producing composite components and fitting and bonding the structural components to the highest standard.

Production: Supporting the Team Leaders when required.

Performance: Day-to-day trimming, fitting and bonding of components to the required production target.

Quality control: Responsibility for maintaining good quality of components in manufacturing.

Health and Safety: Working safely, liaising with Team Leaders to ensure that all tasks carried out comply with the latest Health and Safety requirements.

Responsible for: Leadership and operational Management of Inspection operations within the quality function

Job Purpose

Leadership and Management of Inspection activities:-

• Providing a component Quality Inspection service to the business which minimises component quality risk within programme timelines and budget boundaries

• Propose recommendations for facilities and headcount aligned to the design requirements, programme timescales and budget boundaries

Key Accountabilities (Duties)

• Responsible for the Leadership and daily Management of Inspection operations including scheduling and prioritising of all work.

• Providing Leadership, direction, and support to staff within the inspection operation, including staff issues, technical and design discussion points.

• Propose and advise the Management team in inspection design through a full range of techniques including random or sample inspection, low level visual inspection, bench metrology, CMM or machine measured metrology according to design criteria and assessed risk.

• Develop continuous improvement plans to provide Leadership and direction of Health & Safety, Quality, delivery adherence, productivity and cost improvement activity for inspection operations.

• Operational lead for NCR resolution, ensuring appropriate decisions are made given lead time requirements

• Continue with current metrics and propose new metrics for the Inspection function to give clear visibility of status, drive performance, and enable seasonal activity plans to be created

• Actively develop staff to support succession development and mitigate skills risk. Carry out multi-skill training across inspection functions to allow flexibility in resource deployment. Control holiday and lieu day allocation to support service levels.

• Develop positive relationships with principle interfaces including heads of planning, build, design office and quality engineering functions.

• Ensuring adequate skilled resource is proposed and deployed to fulfil programme timescale requirements.

• Ensure Quality Assurance inspection processes are documented, controlled and completed in a diligent and traceable manner. Ensure the results obtained are both accurate, repeatable and acted upon to assure car quality.

• Actively manage the budget for the Inspection area.
