Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar – one for Rs 20 crore

2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) has gotten off with showcasing a dynamic future of mobility that Mercedes-Benz envisions. Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar (show-car) runs on Formula 1 hybrid technology.

The future of mobility is electric, and autonomous, and steering wheel and pedals are passe. Mercedes-AMG Project ONE two-seater supersports is a fully-fledged Formula 1 hybrid technology shocase from the race track to the road and stands in as a 50th anniversary year showcar.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars says, “The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE was born on the racetrack, created by a team that only we can put together. Our Formula 1 colleagues in Brixworth deliver the best Formula 1 powertrain in the world. The team from Brackley brings world-class development expertise. The AMG team in Affalterbach transfers motorsport performance to the road. The objective is forward-looking technology, ultimate performance, the best laps times. And all of it road legal.”

Mercedes-AMG Project ONE’s plug-in hybrid drive system comes from Formula 1, a result of close cooperation with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains motorsport experts at Brixworth. The integrated and intelligently networked unit comprises a hybrid, turbocharged combustion engine with four electric motors. One is integrated into the turbocharger, another is directly installed on the combustion engine with a link to the crankcase. Two motors drive the front wheels. Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar costs a whopping 2.72 million (about Rs 20 crore, excluding taxes and import).

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car tech supplies the 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging. Four overhead camshafts are driven by spur gears. For high engine speed, pneumatic valve springs replace mechanical valve springs. The mid engine(ahead of the rear axle) vehicle can reach speeds of 11,000 rpm. To permit longevity and use of commercially available Super Plus petrol instead of racing fuel, speed is restricted to below F1 engine speed limit.

Front axle electric motors are capable of rotor revolutions up to 50,000 rpm. Additional boost comes from a high-tech turbocharger. Exhaust gas and compressor turbines are separately located at optimum position to the exhaust side, and the intake side. A shaft featuring an electric motor connects both. With about 90 kW, it electrically drives the compressor turbine. Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar F1 unit designation is MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit Heat).

Turbo lag is completely eliminated, and response time reduced to shorter than in a naturally aspirated V8 engine. The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar electric turbocharger uses bits of surplus energy from the exhaust to generate electricity that’s stored in the high-voltage lithium-ion battery or offers additional drive power to an additional electric motor. The motor produces 120 kW. Installed on the engine, a crankshaft link is made through a spur gear (MGU-K = Motor Generator Unit Kinetic). The tech ensures F1 efficiency and performance.

Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar was driven onto the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) stage by triple Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
