BMW maintained their leading position in the global luxury car segment for Q1 2013, followed by Audi and Mercedes Benz. Of the three German car manufacturers, BMW and Mercedes Benz posted their best ever monthly tally in March 2013, while Audi and Mercedes posted their best ever Q1 sales figures. BMW Group sales during March 2013 have been more outstanding as compared to any other month in the company’s history. BMW sales including MINI and Rolls Royce during March 2013 totaled 191,269 units far exceeding a total of 185,741 units in March 2012.
BMW brand sales during March 2013 stood at 159,195 units while total sales in Q1 stood at 381,404 units, an increase of 7% over 356,562 units in Q1 2012. Similar success was reported by MINI brand of vehicles with a total of 31,763 units sold during March 2013 while sales of Rolls Royce during March totaled 311 units, an increase of 2.6% over March 2012. BMW Motorrad sales in Q1 2013 increased 1.5% to 24,732 units while a total of 13,067 BMW motorcycles were delivered in March, an increase of 6.3% over Q1 2012.
Audi sales during the month of March 2013 and the first quarter of 2013 were also noteworthy. Global deliveries in March totaled 147,700 units, up 3% as compared to sales in the same period in the previous year. Total deliveries in the period January to March 2013 totaled 369,500 units this seeing a 6.8% increase over the same period in 2012.
Major attention was seen where the Audi A1 Sportback, A4 family and SUV models while sales of SUV Q3 saw a 58.2% YoY reaching a total of 28,550 units. Q5 sales increased by 15.6% to a total of 56,350 units. Audi sales in Germany during the month of March 2013, were not as encouraging with the company recording a 1.7% decrease in sales while in the first quarter of this year, Audi sold 59,116 units resulting in an increase of 2%. Here, the company’s most favored model was the A4 Avant with 11,077 units being sold during the period January to March 2013.
Mercedes Benz not only recorded best ever month but also their best quarter. Their Q1 sales stood at 324,898 while that of March stood at 139,920 units. “We again topped the strong result of the previous year and have posted the best month in our company’s history to date. We have never sold as many vehicles in a single month,” Mercedes sales chief Joachim Schmidt said in a statement on Friday.
