Mercedes Benz and Smart recognised for top design with 2012 Red Dot Awards

At the Red Dot design awards, Mercedes Benz and Smart received top honors. Three of Mercedes Benz cars namely the B Class, C Class Coupe and SLS AMG Roadster were declared winners while Smart E-Bike was also recipient of the Red Dot award for their high quality design. The Mercedes B Class Sports Tourer (hatchback) is the next vehicle that will be launched in the Indian auto market. The 2012 launch will see the German automaker entering a new vehicle segment in the country with their new small car, which will strategically allow them to target a new entry level price point to target new first time buyers here.

These two companies were among 1800 manufacturers and designers from over 58 countries who submitted their designs for consideration. The 30 jury team consisted of both national and international experts in the field who assessed over 4500 designs and products.

Designs had to compete in terms of innovation, aestheticity and future orientation. The jury found that the three Mercedes Benz submissions were fit for this award while the Smart E bike too satisfied jury due to its high quality design.

The Smart ebike will start conquering cities and cycle paths across the globe as it is offered in a variety of two color options – Crystal White with electric green accents and dark gray matt with flame orange accents. Prices in Germany will commence from €2,849 inclusive of 19% VAT. The e-bike will possesses high quality components, efficient dynamics and will be fitted with hydraulic brakes from Magura, LED lights, 26” wheels, Continental EcoContact Plus puncture resistant tyres are some of the features being offered. The ebike is fitted with 423 Wh lithium ion battery which is one of the most powerful batteries which can be charged either in a normal socket or whilst riding offering added advantages in terms of cost. A single battery charge can last upto 100 kms.

The jury of the world’s most renowned design competition has acknowledged this fact by awarding the Stuttgart-based company the coveted red dot award for three new Mercedes-Benz car models simultaneously. The winners are the B-Class, the C-Class Coupé and the SLS AMG Roadster. The smart ebike has received the red dot: best of the best award for highest design quality.

This year, 1800 manufacturers and designers from 58 countries registered submissions for consideration by the discerning judges of the red dot awards, which are regarded as a seal of quality for outstanding design. The high-calibre jury of international and independent experts assessed more than 4500 products. Only the best made it through this exclusive field of entrants. The competition recognises well-thought-out, innovative products, aesthetic quality and future-oriented design. According to the hard-to-please and highly respected jury, the new B-Class, the C-Class Coupé and the SLS AMG Roadster satisfy these stringent requirements, all earning the red dot award for high design quality. In addition to the three car models, the Actros truck is also permitted to bear the red dot label.
