Mercedes-Benz India ltd. has commenced local production of its entry level CLA front-wheel drive luxury sedan in India at its newly expanded Chakan CKD assembly plant. The company has announced that it has also commenced production of the petrol version of the GLA 200 Sport crossover (only diesel variant has been produced here so far).
India is the only location outside Europe to locally assemble the Mercedes CLA sedan. Petrol and diesel variants of the CLA and GLA are being built at the facility’s new assembly lines. Production of the new cars involve advanced equipment such as synchronized conveyor systems and latest gen PLC (product Life Cycle) control units for all the equipment. The lines are flexible enough to cater to assembly of various models.
The company says that the local production of its two MFA (Modular Front-wheel drive Architecture) models is aimed at catering to the raising demand and reducing waiting period. The automaker also claims that the festive season demand for the CLA is encouragingly high.
The local production would cater to the growing demand.The CLA sedan is available in three trim levels – CLA 200 CDI, CLA 200 Sport (petrol) and CLA 200 CDI Sport. The diesel variants employ a 2.2-litre motor which is capable of 136 PS and 300 Nm of torque. The petrol variant is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit which is tuned to produce 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque. A 7-speed DCT automatic transmission is standard across the range.
