Already spotted on test in India, Mercedes Benz GLA is a premium compact SUV. Powered by a 2.0 liter four cylinder gasoline engine, the engine combines direct injection and standard ECO start/stop function mated to a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission. It is the first SUV from Mercedes Benz to be offered in permanent all wheel drive system 4MATIC with fully variable torque distribution.
Set to be offered in US markets from September 2014 in two guises – GLA 250 4MATIC priced at $33,300 (INR 20,24,307) and GLA 45 AMG prices will start at $48,300 (INR 29,37,847). Mercedes Benz GLA 250 with front wheel drive will be launched in early 2015 and will be priced at $31,300 (INR 19,03,822).
Other options will include the GLA 250 with Sports Package which will be $2,200 extra which will include body kit and 19” wheels while $1,480 is additional for a panoramic roof. GLA 45 AMG with a price tag of $48,300 could be increased to $60,000 with additional Carbon Fiber package at $3,700 extra, panoramic roof at $1,480 extra and AMG performance seats at $2,250 extra.
Speaking about competition, Mercedes Benz GLA will compete with Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The latter is already on sale at $30,900, the Audi Q3 compact crossover will go on sale in the US soon, coming in at a starting price of $32,500 (INR 19,76,812) for the base FWD variant. The new Audi Q3 will be powered by a 2.0 liter TFSI gasoline engine offering 200 hp and mated to a 6 speed Tiptronic transmission while an all wheel drive system will be offered at an additional cost of $2,100.
Audi Q3 will be presented in two trim grades of Premium Plus and Prestige, both of which will receive xenon plus, LED daytime running lights and tail lights along with dual zone automatic climate controls.
Considering the price structure in the US, this does not in any way guarantee that the GLA will be more affordable than the Audi Q3 in India, which retails at a starting price of less than Rs 25 lakhs.
