Mercedes look at possibility of replacing Schumacher with di Resta
Paul di Resta is the prime candidate to take replace Michael Schumacher, if the 7 time champion announces retirement by the end of this season. Nick Fry, Chief Executive, Mercedes F1, speaks about the future of his team after the champion retires.
Michael Schumacher has had the worst start this year, as he managed to collect just 2 points, compared to his team mate Nico Rosberg’s tally of 41 points. Speaking about Paul, Mr Fry said, “‘Of course Paul’s on our radar. He’s done a fantastic job, he’s a nice guy, he’s great team player and he would be one of the drivers undoubtedly that, if Michael were to decide he didn’t want to continue, we would look at. But we haven’t reached that time yet in our thinking but we have all got a lot of admiration for Paul.”
This is not the first time that di Resta will be participating for Mercedes. He has won the F3 Euro Series title in 2006 and later the German Touring Car championships in 2010. He has performed well for Force India and is now in his second season.
On the other hand, Paul di Resta said, “I’d love to drive for them. I’ve got great friends and great support at Mercedes-Benz. I’ve been part of their programme for six years and I’m still very close to them now. I never say never. Right now I am a Force India Formula One driver so the focus is there. But in the future I want to be winning races and I’ll make my decisions based on that.”
“I am sure if we get to the end of this year and it is continues as it has done for the last few races I think he will probably be asking himself that question. There is time to go and we are not making any decisions yet.
