Amin Yusuf Shaikh was at the wheel of an INR 2.9 crore Mercedes SLS AMG which was just purchased by a friend. The accused Amin, 46, a contractor with the BMC and owner of 250 clean up vehicles was drunk at the time of the accident which took place on Thursday night between 12 Am and 1 AM.
The car hit a stationery car prior to running over 5 persons who were daily wage workers. Some reports suggest that the victims were sitting on the pavement and chatting while other reports stated that the victims were asleep on the pavement.
Amin allegedly lost control over the supercar. He fled the spot after the accident in fear of mob fury. He was however arrested after 4 hours later, at about 4 AM by the Pydhonie police and taken into custody. The victims were moved to J J Hospital where four of the injured were discharged after being administered first aid while the fifth victim has been admitted into the hospital as injuries were more serious.
Amin has been arrested under Section 279 of IPC for rash driving, Section 337 for causing hurt by act endangering life of personal safety and also under Section 338 causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others. However, each of these offences are bailable.
