MG Hector beats Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Jeep Compass – July 2019 sales

In the first full month of sales post launch, MG Hector has managed to snatch the top position from Tata Harrier. Until June 2019, it was Tata Harrier which was the best selling car in the segment. But in July 2019, Harrier has been replaced by MG Hector, which is now the no 1 selling SUV in the segment.

Sales of MG Hector for July 2019 stood at 1,508 units. In comparison, sales of Tata Harrier stood at 740 units in July 2019, slipping to 3rd spot. Tata Harrier registered the highest month on month decline in sales, in comparison to other cars in the segment. From being no 1, it has now slipped to no 3. This is the lowest monthly sales of Tata Harrier since launch in Jan 2019.

On the 2nd spot is Mahindra XUV500, who has managed to keep sales steady, and does not seem to be affected by the launch of MG Hector. Other car which has seen huge decline in sales post launch of Hector, is Jeep Compass. In July 2019, sales of Compass stood at just 509 units, declining more than 35% MoM. This is the lowest sales total posted by Jeep Compass since launch in 2017.

Huge demand for MG Hector has resulted in company closing bookings. The car is sold out for 2019. Those who want delivery in 2020, bookings will be opened soon. Hector is being manufactured at the company’s plant in Halol, Gujarat. Bookings had to be closed, as MG Motor currently has production capacity of around 2k units per month.

If bookings were continued, waiting time could have gone beyond the one year mark. With massive response received from customers, MG Motor is planning to increase production to 3k units per month. This is expected to be achieved by September 2019. With increased production capacity, Hector bookings are likely to re-open soon.

Increased demand for MG Hector is understandable, as it offers several segment-first and best-in-class features. For example, the SUV comes with 5G-ready M2M SIM that allows 50 internet connected features such as remote vehicle control, online navigation with real-time traffic updates, emergency call, geofencing, vehicle status, find my car, etc.

Customers also benefit from the company’s unique MG Shield program that includes assured buyback after three years, 5 free services, 24/7 assistance, 5 years unlimited km warranty and 5 years unlimited km roadside assistance.
