MG Hector doesn’t only sound like gallantry on wheels, but it does pack in punch where required. In this case sales. While there are cars that justify their existence in limited numbers, for hustlers in the mass market, one thing counts, and that’s sales. So, MG Hector dominating its segment bodes well for the newcomer.

The interesting thing about the segment is that it has given most of its entrants some claim to fame. When the XUV500 was launched, it drew in large volumes in quick time. Jeep Compass was largely anticipated, and tried to bring something for everyone through wide-ranging variants. Tata Harrier has given a king’s welcome despite not being present in too many configs. And that’s had a direct effect on sales, which has been contained for the longest time.

For December 2019, MG Hector sales is reported at 3,021 units. Tata Harrier sales were literally half of that at 1507. Mahindra XUV500 saw 1,399 units sold. Jeep Compass sales is reported at 742 units. In the last 6 months, MG Hector sales have been about 3 times the sales of Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500, and about 5 times the sales of Jeep Compass.

MG Motor India’s lone horse, Hector has since day 1 set a pace that the segment has found difficult to keep up with. Total sales in the last six months sees MG Hector sell a total of 15,930 units. That’s a whopping 55.97 percent of segment sales. The longer MG Hector can keep this up, the closer it’ll be to cementing a stronger success story.

In the last 6 months, 5,994 units of Mahindra XUV500 were sold. Tata harrier sold even lesser than that at 5,208. Jeep Compass sales for the six month period stood at 3,346 units. Segment size for the said period is 28,460 units.

It’s highest sales for the last six months was in December. 1,507 units were sold. The same is true for Mahindra XUV500. 1,399 units were sold last month. Jeep Compass highest monthly sales for H2 2019 was in October when 854 units were sold. For all segment players, sales in the last quarter of the year was better than the quarter prior.

In spite of being launched in July 2019, MG Hector sales are higher than that of entire 2019 year sales of Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass. Tata Harrier 2019 sales stood at 15,276 units, Jeep Compass was at 10,935 units while Mahindra XUV500 was at 17.175 units.
