MG testing Baojun 530 SUV in India – Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 rival launch in 2019

MG Motor India, a subsidiary of MG Motor UK, is a completely owned company of one of the largest car maker in China – SAIC. MG Motor took over GM plant in India, and will launch atleast two new cars next fiscal. One of them is a mid-sized 5 seater family SUV, which has now been spied on test, just outside the company’s plant in Halol, Gujarat.

This is the Baojun 530 SUV. It is already on sale in China. With an early 2019 launch predicted, the company is also setting up a network of 300 dealerships and service centers in India. The SUV will be offered with petrol and diesel engine options.

MG Baojun 530 is a 5 seater SUV which will rival the likes of Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta, etc. It will measure 4,655 mm in length, 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height. It exteriors will boast of an aggressive stance with headlamps placed in C shaped housing on its front bumper, squared off wheel arches and blackened B, C and D pillars. Its sides will sport three prominent character lines to augment its SUV stance. It will also receive an electric sun roof and continental tyres.

Interiors of MG Baojun 530 in India could be seen with the same specifications as those on its Chinese counterpart. These would include well upholstered and comfortable seating, a Harman Infinity sound system, an 8” touchscreen infotainment system with Wi-Fi connectivity and safety features among which will be ABS, EBD, electronic stability program from Bosch, start/stop engine feature and side curtain airbags.

In China, Baojun 530 is powered by 1.5 liter and 1.8 liter petrol engines. Its India spec model would be powered by a Fiat sourced 2.0 liter diesel engine offering 170 bhp power and 350 Nm torque.

This engine on the Compass gets mated to a 6 speed manual transmission but it remains to be seen what transmission options MG will offer. Pricing in China is at 78,000 yuan to 119.80 yuan. Heavy localization upto 80% in India will set the MG Baojun 530 in a price bracket of around Rs 15 lakhs.
