Even though mid size SUV sales boomed by 15.01% YoY, the loss of 1,958 units in volume, resulted in an 8.97% MoM decline in Feb 2023

After taking a look at the the sub-compact / sub 4m SUV sales (Nexon, Brezza, Venue, Sonet, etc) and the compact SUV sales (Creta, Seltos, etc), in this post we will take a look at the mid-size SUVs sales performance in Feb 2023. With over 11,455 units sold, Mahindra has total command over mid-size SUV segment as reflected in the market share of 57.62% in February 2023. Contributing to this success are Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic with a combined figure of 6,950 units and XUV700 with 4,505 units sold last month. This is a huge feat for Mahindra in this segment.

Scorpio scored a staggering 166.28% YoY growth as opposed to just 2,610 units sold in 2022 and has a 34.96% market share as well. XUV700 saw marginal YoY growth at 8.87% as opposed to 4,138 units sold in 2022 and holds 22.66% of this market. Both Mahindra offerings suffer in MoM figures with 20.25% and 22.15% YoY decline with Scorpio and XUV700 respectively.

With the launch of new Hector, MG seems to have clawed back some of the market share in this segment. Hector and Hector Plus combined, sold 2,558 units last month. As opposed to 2,102 units sold a year ago and 2,441 units sold a month before, MG saw 21.69% YoY growth and 4.79% MoM growth. Volume gain stood at 456 units YoY and 117 units MoM. Harrier comes off as a better seller when compared to Safari with close to double the numbers. With 2,054 Harriers sold, Tata saw a 21.57% YoY decline, losing 565 units in volume, but there was a 30.66% MoM growth, gaining 482 units in volume. Between Harrier and Safari, we have Hyundai Alcazar in 5th place.

Alcazar sold 1,559 units last month. YoY decline of 38.04% and a MoM growth of a mere 1.43% were observed with Alcazar. Safari sold 1,252 units last month and took 6th place in the mid size SUV sales chart. Safari witnessed a 34.76% YoY decline, losing 667 units in volume. However, Safari did better in MoM analysis with 21.32% growth, gaining 220 units in volume.

With the launch of Red Dark Edition on February 22nd, Tata has given Harrier and Safari ADAS, a 360-degree camera, a larger and slicker 10.25” infotainment display, a digital instrument display and a scrumptious red upholstery on the inside. All this should help Tata to take the fight better against MG and Hyundai, while Mahindra’s dominance is likely to continue.

Tucson Posts 176% MoM Growth

Speaking about the more premium offerings in this space – Starting with Tucson, there was nothing but positive growth to report. We’re talking about highest-in-segment numbers like 189.53% You growth and 176.67% MoM growth with 498 units sold last month.

Compass is next with 406 units sold. It fell into the red, with 60.20% YoY growth and 16.29% MoM growth. Tiguan however, showed 29.17% MoM growth with 93 units sold, it wasn’t enough to beat 130 units sold in February 2022, hence a 28.46% YoY decline was observed. Lastly, we have Citroen C5 Aircross with just 4 units sold and drowned in red throughout.

In total, the mid size SUV sales chart managed to clock 19,879 units. A 15.01% YoY growth was registered when compared to 17,285 units sold in Feb 2022 and an 8.97% MoM decline was registered when compared to 21,837 units sold in January 2023.
