MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept at 2017 IAA

Being showcased at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show, the race inspired MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept follows the same designs as seen on its earlier two counterparts launched in 2006 and 2012. This new MINI hatchback is set for launch sometime in 2019 and borrows inspiration from the Monte Carlo Rally 50 years ago.

The concept which was revealed on 6th September prior to it going on display at Frankfurt is seen with cosmetic updates, aerodynamic accents and a race inspired interior design. Seen in a Black Jack Anthracite exterior paint with Curbside Red metallic accents, the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept sports large front and rear aprons and side skirts and a large rear spoiler.

Air intakes, moulded air deflectors and carbon fiber side skirts enhance aerodynamics and 19” Racetrack lightweight wheels with a multi spoke design add to its sportiness. It also gets circular headlamps with hexagonal radiator grille and receives LED rear lights displaying half of the Union Jack, proclaiming the car’s British origins.

Interiors are equally sporty with low mounted bucket seats with 5 point belts, a digital instrument panel and heads-up display. The car also gets paddle shifters positioned behind the steering wheel. Though no engine specifications have been detailed, the production model runs on a 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged engine offering 231 PS peak power and 320 Nm peak torque mated to a manual gearbox. This engine allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.1 seconds (AT), and 6.3 seconds in a manual gearbox.

MINI JCW GP Concept pays a tribute to the company’s racing days. It focuses on speed with a minimal interior. Resultantly, interiors are stripped down but not devoid of comfort. The interior racing setup is a mix of racing seats with a 5 point harness, and aluminum roll cage. It features a digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and other JCW inserts.
