Mitsubishi does not have any real presence in India with their Pajero Sport sales being way below expectations and Montero also struggling to attract buyers. The five new models being planned by Mitsubishi will include a Mirage hatchback which will come in to compete with both Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
Mirage will be powered by a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder engine offering 77 bhp while being mated to either a manual or CVT transmission. The interesting thing to notice is that Mirage comes with a 4 star Euro NCAP rating. Mitsubishi also plans to launch Attrage compact sedan once Mirage proves its success. Initially all models will be imported into India, while local assembly at the company’s Hindustan Motor facility in Chennai will follow at a later stage.
Noting increased demand for SUVs in the country, and keen to cash in on this segment, Mitsubishi is also planning to introduce two new SUVs in India by 2015. Mitsubishi Outlander is one of these SUVs slated for launch, which will be brought in via the CBU route due to which pricing could offer some challenges.
