Fuel efficiency is one factor that a major section of buyers in India take into account when purchasing a new car. It is also this factor that is crucial in turning buyer’s attention away from one make or model and towards another and an aspect that can make or break the very success of a newly introduced model.

Besides losing their plum position, market leaders Maruti Suzuki also do not have any model on the list of top 10 fuel efficient cars. The new Honda City peaks where fuel efficiency is concerned, beating Honda Amaze to stand at 26 kmpl. This is the fourth generation Honda City being introduced and its success can be seen by the extensive bookings and four month long waiting period.

The new Honda City is powered by a 1.5 liter i-DTEC diesel engine and its mileage claims have been certified by Automotive Research Association of India. Compared to Honda City, the Amaze claims a mileage of 25.8 kmpl while Honda DZire offers just 23.4 kmpl with the new Alto 800 at 22.7 kmpl lower down the rung.

Maruti Suzuki is continuously working on improving fuel economy in their models both where petrol and diesel variants are concerned. The company is also emphasizing on other initiatives such as lighter models and other powertrain improvements with new models claiming higher fuel efficiency as compared to their predecessors. This is evident in the new Alto 800 which has fuel efficiency of 22.7 kmpl as against 19.7 kmpl seen in the earlier model.

After Honda, it is a range of Tata cars which feature in the list. The first is Tata Nano petrol, which is the only petrol powered car in the list. Following Nano, other Tata cars in the list are Indigo eCS, Indigo XL, Indigo, Indica eV2. Cheverloet Beat diesel, is at fifth, while there is a new entrant, recently launched 2014 Ford Fiesta diesel. At the 10th spot is Hyundai Xcent sedan.
