At the launch event of Mahindra TUV300, which was held at Mahindra’s state of the art plant in Chakan near Pune, Mr Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group gave an interesting speech. He said that the competition they are facing today, is not only from rival manufacturers, but also from the likes of Uber and Ola, who have managed to negate the need of owning a car, especially for the young generation.
What do car manufacturers do if people don’t have the desire to buy cars? In such an environment, how do car manufacturers like Mahindra think of getting forward, increasing sales, etc? As per Mr Mahindra, the solution is to make products which people love, products which do not shout “Look at me”, but instead subtly demand a second look.
The rate at which radio taxi business is growing, the need for owning a car will be completely negated by individuals, unless there are cars which people want to own – objects of desire, he says. If a manufacturer manages to deliver such a product, then they need not worry. There will always be customers for such products.
Mr Mahindra ends the speech saying that the new TUV300 is one such ‘object’, one such car which people would love, and would want to buy.
What Mr Mahindra is saying, makes total sense. For eg, there are so many smartphone manufacturers, but somehow only the Apple iPhone has been able to stand out, and that too for years. Of course we are not comparing the iPhone with TUV300, but the iPhone is one such ‘object of desire’. But, does the new TUV300 has that kind of edge over rivals? Only time will tell.
