In what is a bizarre event, MSRTC bus (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) belonging to Satara depot abruptly lost its rear axle while on the move, inflicting minor injuries on 4 out of 9 passengers that were on board. The photo shows that the rear axle, complete with the differential and braking system, has been severed from the chassis.
While the drive shaft coupling at the differential fail quite frequently on heavy commercial vehicles, the detachment of the entire axle assembly off the chassis is a very rare failure. We think that the one of the fasteners that is responsible for holding the rear axle and leaf spring suspension together failed, causing an eventual dynamic overload on rest of the fasteners and members. If such a situation is not noticed and rectified in time, it would lead to a catastrophic failure such as this.
Fortunately, the bus was within city limits (in front of Satara Collector’s office) and hence it was a low speed accident. It’s reported that the failure occurred when the driver accelerated. Had the bus was packed with passengers and travelling at high speed, this failure could have resulted in extensive causalities which may include fellow motorists as well.
Talking to media, MSRTC controller for Satara, Madhukar Shembade assured that the transport department will investigate the cause of failure and act accordingly.
