Why PM Narendra Modi uses BMW instead of Made-in-India car – Explained

As former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi used Made-in-India Mahindra Scorpio during his duties and campaigns. Even at swearing-in ceremony, Modi was dropped in his armoured Scorpio. This cultivated more hope that he would get Mahindra Scorpio again, with better security features mandated for Prime Minister of India.

Anand Mahindra Mahindra Group Chairman and Pawan Goenka, President of Automotive Division respectively, were eager to custom build Scorpio for Narendra Modi as per SPG’s statutes and requirements of Prime Minister’s motorcade. They also considered this opportunity to bring pride for the company and country as well.

But Special Protection Group decided to go with BMW 7 Series, as they did with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. But with PM Modi promoting made in India, why did he agree for the 7 Series? A Quora user has jotted down the points as to why the BMW was selected. Below are the points-

First – BMW 760Li Security Edition as compared to the Mahindra Scorpio is less conspicuous in its presence. Mahindra Scorpio is taller in stance making it an easy target. The BMW 7-Series on the other hand rides lower thus making it somewhat difficult for direct shot to a sniper while it is also easier to steer.

Second – The BMW 7-Series with its lower ground clearance also has its center of mass closer to the ground. It is quicker in response and immediately reacts to change in movement while control is also easier.

Third – Another leading reason for selecting BMW 760Li Security Edition as the Prime Minister’s vehicle would be for the fact that it is less prominent among the other BMW X5 vehicles used by SPG personnel as compared to the armored Mahindra Scorpio.

Fourth – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s top of the line BMW 760Li Security Edition is also certified with BRV 2009 and VR7 ballistics protection. This means that the BMW 760Li High Security Edition is one of the safest vehicle in India, capable of protecting occupants from almost everything the enemies can throw at it, like swarming bullets and loud bombs. The car unlike in Indian films, is designed to not explode and reach sky high when the fuel tank is fired upon. The cabin of 760Li gets sealed and becomes a gas proof chamber when gas attack is attempted. Also, the Beemer can continue to run on flat tyres for very long, and misdirect missiles and IEDs using high-tech heat sensors and toys we are not supposed to know about.

We don’t know if Q is behind all the installations in Narendra Modi’s custom 760Li, but we’re sure James Bond would want to check it out.

Fifth – The BMW 7-Series was purchased during the time former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was in office. The government hence refrained from added spending, taking decisions to utilize the existing 7-Series fleet which already complied with security features as laid down by the SPG for the Prime Minister’s protection. But with the new generation 7 Series now on sale in India, it might be the right time to upgrade.
