The 41.9 kWh battery pack in Chevrolet Spark EUV spied testing, is rated to deliver around 400 km on a single charge (CLTC cycle)
You might be familiar with the Yep 3-Door and Yep Plus 5-Door electric SUVs from Baojun. These are cute-sy and boxy electric SUVs with a lot of appeal. They are positioned on a similar platform as MG Comet EV sold in India. Naturally, we are hoping Baojun Yep Plus will make its way to India under MG brand.
The recent events in Latin America have sparked interest in this vehicle as Baojun Yep Plus SUV has spawned its first badge-engineered version. We wish it was an MG counterpart, but it bears a Chevy logo, likely to be launched in Latin American market soon. However, the name of this SUV is quite ironic as it is called Chevrolet Spark EUV Activ.
Chevrolet Spark EUV Activ
SAIC is among the most notable Chinese State-owned automotive brands. SAIC has a strategic conglomeration with iconic American brand General Motors and another Chinese State-owned brand Wuling. Called SAIC-GM-Wuling, this conglomerate jointly owns Baojun brand and has many badge-engineered vehicles in their portfolio.
For example, Baojun 530 is sold as Chevrolet Captiva, a General Motors brand, Wuling Almaz and MG Hector, a SAIC brand. Apart from many other examples, Baojun Yep Plus SUV is now the recipient of badge-engineering exercise and has spawned a Chevrolet counterpart in the form of Spark EUV Activ.
We don’t know if it is American sense of humour or just irony, an electric vehicle bears the name Spark. Pun aside, this electric SUV is a badge-engineered Baojun Yep Plus, which has 5-Doors as standard. It is likely to be launched during Chevrolet’s centenary celebrations in the Brazilian market.
Except for a Chevy badge, we don’t see any real changes between Baojun Yep Plus and Chevrolet Spark EUV Activ. Where dimensions are concerned, this electric SUV will measure 3,996 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, 1,726 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,560 mm. It has a kerb weight of 1,325 kg.
MG Version Expected?
Baojun Yep Plus SUV was launched in China in April 2024 from a starting price of CNY 93,800 (approx Rs 11 lakh). It is positioned on a similar platform as MG Comet EV. There’s a 41.9 kWh battery pack under Chevrolet Spark EUV spied that promises around 400 km on a single charge (CLTC cycle). This battery powers a single 100 bhp motor, driving rear wheels.
On the inside, there is a dual screen implementation, measuring 10.2-inch each, running KIOS user interface. Features include 360-degree camera, sophisticated automated parking and ADAS suite developed by DJI among others. We hope this vehicle makes its way to India under the MG Motor brand and probably launch in 2025 or early 2026. Design of the same has been already patented in India.
