A mystery Hyundai SUV has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, sparking fresh speculation about Hyundai’s future product strategy for the booming compact SUV space. The camouflaged test mules were seen earlier today in Mumbai, moving in city traffic as a three-car convoy, and have been independently captured by MotorBeam, Autocar India and us.
Upright, boxy design with Ioniq-style lighting
As per observations from the spy shots, the unidentified Hyundai SUV features:
– An upright stance and boxy proportions
– Slim, dotted LED tail-lamps inspired by Hyundai Ioniq 5
– Flat tailgate with a chunky rear bumper
– Flared wheel arches with plastic cladding
– Flush-fitting door handles
– Black roof rails and shark-fin antenna
– Funky roof spoiler with integrated stop lamp
– Front gets connected LED DRL
– Front headlamp placed on lower bumper

The test vehicle was seen running on thick-profile MRF tyres and what appear to be 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, hinting at a comfort-focused, urban SUV rather than a hardcore off-roader.
Interior and tech cues
While interior images were not captured, on-ground inputs suggest the SUV gets:
– A large digital instrument cluster
– A touchscreen infotainment system, both estimated to be around 10 inches
– 360-degree camera hardware, inferred from mirror-mounted sensors
These features already place the mystery SUV above entry-level offerings in terms of technology.
ICE or EV? Still unclear, but signs point to ICE
Automotive enthusiast Sidk, who spotted the convoy claims to have clearly seen a tailpipe with some liquid dripping from it, strongly suggesting that this is an internal combustion engine vehicle. Adding to this, he also mentioned that the SUV appeared to be roughly the size of Tata Punch, placing it firmly in the micro SUV / sub-4m SUV category. He spotted the SUV today in Mumbai near dockyard.

Another Punch rival from Hyundai?
This raises an interesting question. Hyundai already has a Punch rival in the form of the Hyundai Exter. While Exter has found decent traction in the market, its sales are significantly lower than the segment leader, Tata Punch, which continues to dominate the charts.
With the micro SUV segment booming and Punch consistently posting strong monthly volumes, it is entirely plausible that Hyundai is exploring a second, more rugged or more SUV-focused product to better challenge Tata’s bestseller. The boxy stance, flatter surfaces and more “muscular” proportions of the spied SUV support this theory.

Or Hyundai’s made-for-India small EV?
There is also another angle. Hyundai had earlier teased a ‘muscular SUV with off-road capabilities’ in its investor presentation last year, alongside plans for a made-for-India small electric SUV scheduled for launch sometime next year. Some design cues, especially the Ioniq 5-inspired lighting, could point toward an EV lineage.
However, if the presence of a tailpipe is confirmed, this particular test mule is more likely to be ICE-powered, or at least an early mule of a platform that could eventually spawn both ICE and EV derivatives.

What’s clear so far
– This appears to be an all-new Hyundai SUV, not a facelift or derivative of an existing model
– It has not been spied anywhere else globally, suggesting an India-first or India-specific product
– Segment positioning points toward a micro SUV / sub-4m SUV
– Powertrain details remain unclear, though ICE seems more likely at this stage
For now, Hyundai is keeping its cards close to its chest. But with multiple test mules already running on public roads, more clarity is expected in the coming months. Whether this turns out to be a second Punch rival, a new rugged Exter alternative, or part of Hyundai’s future EV roadmap, one thing is certain — Hyundai is far from done in India’s hottest SUV segment.
