Scoop – Showcased at Auto Expo 2020, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Turbo variant has been launched. Bookings have opened at dealers.
It is worth noting that the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine was first launched with Venue. It was recently introduced in Aura compact sedan as well. However, power ratings are different for these cars. On NIOS and Aura, the engine is configured to deliver 100 hp of max power and 172 Nm of max torque. On Venue, the same engine is tuned to deliver 120 hp, while torque output remains the same at 172 Nm.
The primary feature of the new NIOS is its 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that delivers more power and torque in comparison to the existing 1.2-litre petrol engine. NIOS Turbo also gets a sporty makeover with exterior and interior updates. The engine on NIOS Turbo variant will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, just like Aura. There won’t be an automatic option at the time of launch. In this context, Venue 1.0 fares better, as it offers 7-speed dual clutch transmission in addition to the 6-speed manual.
Positioned as a sportier version of NIOS, the Turbo variant gets styling updates such as revised front and rear bumpers, blacked out radiator grille and ‘Turbo’ badging on front grille and boot. The hatch also gets attractive dual-tone colour option. Interiors have been spruced up with an all-black colour theme and the contrasting red stitching enhances the car’s sporty appeal.
It may be recalled that at the time of its launch last year, Grand i10 NIOS came with a range of best-in-segment and first-in-segment features. These included rear AC vents, 20.25 cm touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, all-digital 13.46 cm speedometer and cluster with MID, impact sensing auto door unlock, projector fog lamps, driver rear view monitor, emergency stop signal, wireless phone charger, rear power outlet, eco coating, and shark fin antenna. In addition to these, some new features could also be introduced in NIOS 1.0 Turbo edition.

Grand i10 NIOS Turbo variant will have the same set of safety features as the existing 1.2-litre petrol ‘Sportz’ trim. Some key safety features include dual air bags, ABS with EBD, central locking, immobilizer, parking assist, rear parking sensors, rear defogger, rear camera with display, driver and passenger seat belt reminder, and speed alert system.
NIOS Turbo variant is priced at a premium of up to Rs 1.2 lakh. Only two variants are on offer. Sportz MT and Sportz MT DT. Price is Rs 7.68 lakhs and Rs 7.73 lakhs respectively. Prices of Sportz 1.2 MT is Rs 6.43 lakhs and that of Sportz 1.2 MT DT is Rs 6.73 lakhs. Existing 1.2-litre petrol NIOS is available in the range of Rs 5.05 – 7.67 lakh. NIOS Turbo will continue to compete with rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Ford Figo. It will be most appropriate for people looking for zippy rides across the city.
