The new i20 is slated to be launched in India in the coming months with three engine options
The eagerly anticipated new generation Hyundai i20 premium hatchback has been spotted in India. The car which is not so far from its launch is currently undergoing on-road emission tests as a part of the ARAI approval process in Pune.
Design
We can confirm that the new Hyundai i20 for India is identical to its European counterpart in terms of exterior styling. The edgy front fascia with low-slung hexagonal grille, angular headlamps and triangular foglamps makes the new comer much sportier than its predecessor.
Even in profile, the 2021 Hyundai i20 has hardly anything in common with the outgoing model. The rear is characterized by the prominent interconnected LED combination lamps which is quickly becoming a new Hyundai design trait. Spy video below is credit to Youtube channel PowerStrokePS.
Interior
If you think the new gen Hyundai i20’s exterior is a drastic departure from the old car, wait till you check the interior out. With a radical redesign and modern connectivity features, we expect the hatchback to set a new benchmark in its segment in India.
The touchscreen infotainment console embraces the instrument console like in the modern Mercedes cars. Other highlights include Creta-like steering wheel, a hexagonal center console and camouflaged AC vents. It is reasonable to expect the top-end variant to be equipped with wireless charging, multiple airbags, ESP and so on.
Powertrain
The new gen Hyundai i20 for India is most likely to share its powertrain lineup with the Venue compact crossover. The existing 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol motor with 5-MT producing 84 hp is expected to be the range starter.
The top-end petrol variant would be the 1.0-liter turbocharged direct injection motor producing 118 hp and 172 Nm of torque. Transmission options for this motor would be a 6-MT and a 7-DCT.
Hyundai discontinued the diesel variants of the current i20 post BS6 deadline but the new gen model will be equipped with the updated 100 hp 1.5-liter which is likely to employ a 6-MT or a 6-AT.
Launch
The new gen Hyundai i20 is expected to go on sale during the festive season. With a modern design, wider powertrain options and lengthy equipment list, the hatchback would be aiming to snatch the segment leadership from the Maruti Baleno. Let’s face it, the other contenders in the premium hatchback space are already on the sidelines.
