New Hyundai mini SUV (Ford EcoSport rival) to premiere at Auto Expo 2016?

New Hyundai mini SUV coming soon

Like its platform-mates, the new crossover would be heavily localized in India.

Hyundai India is gearing up to feed the SUV frenzy of the market by whipping out the most comprehensive crossover portfolio, addressing every price segment between INR 6 lakhs and INR 30 lakhs. By the end of 2016, Hyundai India’s crossover portfolio will be augmented from the current 3 products (i20 Active, Creta, Santa Fe) to 5.

Between the i20 Active and Creta, there exists a gap big enough for a new mini crossover SUV to operate. Such an offering is expected to make its world debut at the Auto Expo 2016 in India in the first week of February, probably in a near-production avatar.

2016 Hyundai i20 Active

The new mini SUV in question will be based on the same platform as the i20 Active and Creta.

Not much about the new Hyundai mini SUV is known as of now but it would share its platform with the i20 and Creta. Being a sub-4 metre product, it is expected to derive its powertrain lineup from the i20 Crossover (a 83 PS 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 90 PS 1.4-litre diesel engine).

The crossover will be pitted against the Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300 in a segment that is growing at a promising pace. Since both the donor models are heavily localized in India, expect the new Hyundai to arrive at a competitive price point.

The 5th Hyundai SUV for India is most likely to be the new Tucson which would take care of the void that exists between the Creta and Santa Fe. It will pickup a fight with the likes of Mahindra XUV500, Skoda Yeti, Honda CR-V, etc.
