The launch of the all-new Kia Seltos and the return of Tata Sierra have intensified competition in the mid-size SUV space, especially at the crucial entry-level price points where most buyers begin their search. With both SUVs now starting close to the Rs 11 lakh mark (ex-showroom), the comparison between their respective base and near-base variants becomes particularly relevant for value-conscious buyers.
Pricing: Seltos Undercuts Sierra at Entry Level
The new Kia Seltos opens its range with the HTE 6MT petrol NA variant priced at Rs 10.99 lakh, making it the more affordable entry point when compared to Tata Sierra Smart+ petrol NA, which starts at Rs 11.49 lakh. The gap continues across the next rung as well, with Seltos HTE (O) petrol MT priced at Rs 12.09 lakh versus Sierra Pure petrol MT at Rs 12.99 lakh. Even in automatic trims, Kia maintains an advantage, with the Seltos HTE (O) IVT coming in at Rs 13.39 lakh, undercutting Sierra Pure 7DCA priced at Rs 14.49 lakh.

In diesel form too, Kia Seltos holds a pricing edge. The Seltos HTE diesel MT is priced at Rs 12.59 lakh compared to Sierra Smart+ diesel MT at Rs 12.99 lakh. This difference widens further with higher trims, where Seltos HTE (O) diesel AT is priced at Rs 14.99 lakh against Sierra Pure diesel AT at Rs 15.99 lakh. Overall, Kia’s pricing strategy clearly targets aggressive value positioning at the entry level.
Powertrain Choices: Turbo Advantage for Seltos Buyers
One of the biggest differentiators at the base level is powertrain availability. Kia offers the Seltos with three engine choices right from the lower trims – a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5L turbo-petrol with iMT, and a 1.5L diesel engine. In contrast, Tata Sierra’s entry variants are limited to naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines, with the more powerful turbo-petrol reserved for higher trims. Sierra petrol turbo price starts from Rs 17.99 lakh with the Adventure+ variant, and it is only offered with 6 AT, there is no manual on offer with Sierra turbo petrol.

This means buyers opting for Seltos HTE (O) can access a turbo-petrol engine at Rs 12.89 lakh, something Sierra buyers cannot at a comparable price point. For enthusiasts or those seeking stronger performance, this gives Kia a clear advantage in the entry segment.

Features Comparison
On the features front, both SUVs offer standard safety features like six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, ABS, ISOFIX mounts. Both SUVs also come with LED headlights and flush door handles as standard. Sierra does not offer a touchscreen infotainment and speakers in base variant. Whereas, Seltos comes with 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12 inch LCD instrument cluster with 4.2 inch colour MID, cruise control, rear AC vents, multiple USB-C chargers, etc.

Moving one step up, Seltos HTE (O) adds split rear seats, semi-leatherette upholstery, connected LED tail lamps, roof rails, and drive modes on automatic variants. Sierra Pure responds with a larger touchscreen, premium audio system, TPMS, hill descent control, multiple drive modes, and paddle shifters on automatic variants.
