New Mahindra Thar SUV spied on video ahead of launch

Even though launch of second-gen Mahindra Thar is not expected before H2 2020, extensive road tests are already underway. It is likely that new Thar SUV is in primary stages of development. It could have several upgrades, including an all-new platform.

Existing Thar 4×4 model is based on the old MM 540, which will not be able to meet new safety regulations, which come into effect from October this year. This is one of the reasons why an upgrade has become necessary.

The new platform for 2020 Thar will offer improved safety. It will come with a BS-VI compliant engine that will improve performance and fuel efficiency. Mahindra is working on a new 2.0 liter diesel engine which will be used in their new gen cars, including the Thar, Scorpio, Bolero, XUV500, etc. This engine will be offered in a range of different tunes, depending on the model. On board Thar, this engine is expected to deliver about 140 hp, while on XUV500, it is expected to deliver 180 hp.

Thar test mule appears to be wider and longer than the existing model. However, the basic design elements have been retained. For instance, the box-like design and tarpaulin top are the same as the current model. 2020 Mahindra Thar 4×4 is expected to have ample space and provision to accommodate accessories and off-road equipment. The latest spy video was shot by Himanshu Shandilya, in Zirakpur, Punjab.

Interiors of second-gen Mahindra Thar 4×4 are expected to undergo a complete revamp. An all-new dashboard is definitely on the cards. Key features that would be offered as standard across all variants include dual airbags, ABS, speed alert system, and seat belt reminder. Upgrades will allow new Thar 4×4 to attract a wider customer base and not just off-road enthusiasts.

New Mahindra Thar 4×4 will continue to offer the same level of off-roading capabilities, if not more, as the existing model. Standard model could come with two-wheel drive configuration and customers will have the option to choose 4×4 system on top variants.

Next-gen Mahindra Thar 4×4 is expected to be launched in 2020. It could make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. Mahindra will be introducing several new platforms that year, keeping in view BS-VI emission norms that become applicable in 2020. Launch of new electric vehicles could also be on the agenda.
