One of the best selling car in the country, it is anyone’s guess how important the product is to Maruti Suzuki, especially after the advent of new age compact sedans like Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Tata Tigor, VW Ameo and so on. All these cars came post the launch of DZire, to get a slice of the market share. But none came even close.
Now with the third generation DZire, Maruti has increased the stakes in the game, as they claim to have improved the car in every segment. We were in Goa recently to test drive the new Dzire petrol and diesel variants. Here is our report about the new DZire. But before that, lets have a look at Dzire variants and respective prices.

The front is very similar to the new generation Swift, with projector headlamps and LED DRLs being the highlight. In the center is a new grille with chrome surround. Even the foglamp encasing is seen with chrome surround to give the car a premium look. The bonnet is sculpted and bigger, adding to a better road presence as compared to the older DZire. Speaking about dimensions, the wheelbase is now longer, body is wider by 20 mm, height is shortened by 40 mm while boot is larger.

Side profile highlights include the new 15 inch machine cut, dual tone alloys. Previous generation of Dzire looked more like a Swift with a boot. This was mainly because how the car looked from the side. The C pillar abruptly ending and joining into the boot made the car look disproportionate. But with the new Dzire, there are no such issues. The side profile now features a roofline and shoulder line integrate with the boot seamlessly, giving the car a proper sedan-like look.
At the rear is a new set of tail lights with LED DRLs. In between these tail lights is a thick chrome slat. Then there is a larger lower bumper with parking sensors and reflectors at the bottom. Overall, the car looks much more attractive and premium than ever before.

Dual tone dashboard in the front now comes with a faux wooden insert, flat bottomed leather stitched steering wheel (again with faux wooden insert), Smartplay infotainment system which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a 7 inch color touchscreen. The dashboard layout is simple, yet eye-catching. The touch and feel of materials is also decent.
Thanks to a longer and wider body, the interiors are now much more spacious than before. This has resulted in passengers getting more legroom, shoulder room and head room. Even at the rear, three adults can comfortably travel through a long journey. The seats are more comfortable and offer much better support. Door panels have bottle holders while cup holders are present in the rear passenger center arm rest as well as near the gear lever for front passenger and driver.
There is a 12V charging port in the front as well as at the rear. AC is really impressive, and cools the cabin in no time. We were battling Goa heat, but the car made life much easier. Rear passengers too will be happy to learn that the new DZire now comes with rear AC vents. The 4 speakers provide a decent sound quality and you would enjoy listening to your favorite music on the go.

Engine & Mileage
Engine options on board with the new Dzire remain same as before. These are in the form of 1.3 liter diesel engine and 1.2 liter petrol engine. Their output stands at 75 hp / 190 Nm and 83 hp / 113 Nm respectively. Transmission options on offer with both version are 5 speed MT or AMT. Though the engine remains same, performance has been improved tremendously, thanks to a lighter body.
It is this lighter body which has also resulted in higher mileage figures. Petrol variant of new Maruti DZire will deliver an ARAI certified mileage of 22 kmpl, for both manual as well as AMT option. This is more than 1.5 kmpl better than the outgoing DZire petrol which delivered a mileage of 20.85 kmpl.
New Dzire diesel will deliver a claimed mileage of 28.4 kmpl, making it the most fuel efficient car in India. Currently the title of most fuel efficient car in India is held by Maruti Ciaz SHVS, which delivers 28.09 kmpl. Both, manual as well as AMT variants of the new DZire will offer 28.4 kmpl. The older DZire offered 26.59 kmpl.

Safety & Security
Based on the new heartact platform, which consists of 36% high tensile steel, the chassis of new Dzire is safer than ever before. Maruti claims that the new Dzire complies with standard crash tests as per norms which will be laid out by the government. In addition to a stronger chassis, Maruti has also made dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard across all variants. Below are some of the safety / security features on offer with new Dzire.

Ride & Handling
We were in Goa to test drive the new Dzire. The roads here in Goa gave us a chance to drive the car not only on smooth tarmac, but also on bumpy roads laden with potholes and uneven surfaces. After driving all four versions of the car, one thing is certain – the new Dzire offers you best cabin comfort. It soaks in those bumps and potholes effortlessly, while the impressive NVH levels keep the cabin quite while you are at it. The ground clearance is enough for Indian roads.
Of the petrol and diesel variant, the petrol Dzire is more refined. It offers a relaxed drive experience, gear shifts are smoother, engine is less noisier and pick up is better. On the other hand, the diesel variant is the one you should buy if you are looking at clocking lots of kms. At an impressive 28.4 kmpl average, this is the most fuel efficient car on offer in India.
Both variants are good at cruising along the highway, but it is the manual variants which are more fun to drive. The AMT variants you should select in case your daily commute is more through the city traffic. Acceleration is good, the tyres hold their stead even when taking on those fast corners. Braking too has impressive bite and with ABS as standard, it delivers a good braking performance.
Sadly, the steering wheel is the same old setup. It fails to weigh up with increase in speed, as well as it does not have that center pull. If Maruti could add this, it would make the driving dynamics of the car even better.
The old Dzire was the best selling car in the segment. In fact, it was among the top 3 cars sold in India. With the new Dzire, Maruti can expect nothing less. They have not only upped their game, but have also created a new benchmark in the segment. Loaded with features, and added space as USP, Maruti will have to worry more about Dzire eating into sales of Ciaz, than into that of rivals.
Also, to keep the exclusivity, Maruti will not sell this Dzire to taxi segment. For taxi segment, they will continue to sell the old Dzire. This is a very welcome move taken by Maruti.
