Talking to media on the sidelines of Frankfurt Motor Show 2015, Toshihiro Suzuki, the newly appointed president and COO of Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), confirmed that there are as many as 15 new Maruti Suzuki products lined up for the next five years.
The top official added that 13 out of the 15 products will include replacements and upgrades of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.’s (MSIL) existing product portfolio. The aim is to gradually make a shift from small to bigger cars.
Mr. Suzuki likens its Indian subsidiary to a turbocharged engine, in a sense that it will boost the brand’s overall growth in the coming years. MSIL is already accounting for over one-third of the parent company’s global sales and with an aggressive target of 2 million annual sales by 2020, the contribution from the country is only set to increase.
Moving forward, more focus would be laid on joint development of products by SMC and MSIL for global markets. The R&D capabilities of the Indian subsidiary will be strengthened. The automaker will work towards light-weighting its future products to arrive at a high fuel efficiency. The SHVS mild hybrid technology would also be on board most of its future vehicles.
After the Maruti Baleno global hatchback, the Japanese small car specialist would be introducing its sub-4 metre compact crossover SUV codenamed YBA at the Auto Expo in early 2016. The product onslaught will also include the next gen models of Swift, Dzire and Ertiga.
