Suzuki Motors revealed their all new generation Swift hatchback in front of global audience. Featuring a more sportier design, the new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift is lighter and more spacious than the current Swift, which will soon be discontinued.
New Maruti Suzuki Swift is offered with both petrol as well as mild hybrid tech. Price in Japan starts from ¥ 1.3 million (INR 7.75 lakh) for base petrol 2WD variant to ¥ 1.9 million (INR 11.21 lakh) for top-end hybrid 4WD variant. All variants are standard 5 door versions, while the sportier 3 door version will be launched at a later date.
– Set to share Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform, seen on the Baleno and Ignis, 2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift will receive more rigidity than the outgoing model with lower center of gravity while it will also excel in performance and fuel efficiency as compared to its current counterpart. It will measure 3,840 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width and 1,525 mm in height and sit on a wheelbase measuring 2,450 mm. Kerb weight will range between 800-1000 kgs. It will be presented in five variants in Japan – XG, XL, Hybrid ML, Hybrid RS and RSt and will receive a more contemporary styling.
The new Swift will boast of new headlamp clusters with hexagonal shaped LED pilot lamps, U shaped LED DRLs and a hexagonal front grille with chrome accents inspired by the Jaguar F-Type. On its sides, 2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift gets a floating roof while upper segment of C Pillars and A and B Pillars are blackened. The rear door handle is now located on the C Pillar. Where wheel design is concerned, the top end RS variants receive diamond cut 16” wheels which are not seen on the Hybrid ML, XG and XL. The tail end receives new spoiler design while tail lamps are compact with a 3D effect along with C shaped reflectors and LED illumination.
Interiors of the 2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift will get an all black color scheme with metallic accents. The dashboard is seen in a new design while steering wheel gets a fresh design as well. The central console will sport new touchscreen infotainment system with navigation along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smart phone integration.
A distinctive Mercedes AMG inspired instrument cluster with dials and full color MID will be evident while seating will be more plush and comfortable. Driver seat receives integrated arm rest. Interior space is at a premium while boot space will also be extended to stand at 579 liters which is a massive Improvement over the outgoing Swift with a total boot space of 205 liters.
Depending on trim level, standard and added features could include a total of 6 airbags, ABS, ESP, automatic climate controls, keyless entry, push button engine start/stop, heated front seats and rear parking sensors with camera. It also gets DVD/CD, USB and Bluetooth phone integration which navigation is supported via offline maps on SD card.
Engine, Transmission, Mileage
Engines vary for the Japanese spec model and its counterpart in India. The Japanese Swift will come in with three powertrain options to include a 1.2 liter K12C petrol engine, a 1.0 liter Boosterjet engine and 1.2 liter Dualjet diesel with SHVS.
To be seen on the 2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift in India will be a 1.2 liter, 4 cylinder VVT petrol offering 83 bhp power at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm besides a 1.3 liter, 4 cylinder DDiS diesel engine offering 74 bhp power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm toque at 2,000 rpm. Both engines get mated to a 5 speed manual and CVT.
Lighter in weight and with better tuned engines, the new Swift is also expected to be more fuel efficient. Mileage should be around 21 kmpl where the petrol engine is concerned, going upto 27 kmpl for its diesel counterpart.
2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift is likely to be priced from ¥ 1.3 million (INR 7.75 lakh) for the entry-level petrol 2WD variant, and go up to ¥ 1.9 million (INR 11.21 lakh) for top-spec hybrid 4WD model. Prices in India however could range between INR 5 lakhs for the base model going upto INR 8 lakhs for the top end variant.
2017 (Maruti) Suzuki Swift was unveiled in Japan on 27th December and is set for launch on 4th January 2017. Launch in India is on the cards for later next year following its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. It will be produced in India from the company plant in Gujarat from where exports across the world will be conducted.
The feature loaded Maruti Suzuki swift which will also come in with aggressive pricing will compete with the Hyundai Grand i10, Ford Figo, Honda Brio, Tata Bolt, and the likes.

In India, the new gen Swift is expected to come with the 1.0-liter BoosterJet turbo petrol motor, 1.2-litre K-series petrol (some variants with SHVS). Suzuki is likely to replace the ageing 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine with a new homegrown mill. Both manual and automatic transmissions will be on offer. India launch is expected to take place by Diwali 2017.
