New Maruti WagonR price will be higher than rival cars in segment

Maruti Suzuki India Limited will launch the new WagonR in India on January 23. It will be seen as a strong competitor to both the Tata Tiago and recently launched Hyundai Santro. But, it will be priced higher than the duo.

Oh the three, Tata Tiago is the most affordable at Rs 3.5 lakhs starting price, followed by Hyundai Santro, which starts at Rs 3.9 lakhs. New Maruti WagonR price will start in the range of Rs 4.5 lakhs. Though the entry level price of WagonR is higher than the two, the top variant price will be in a similar range of Rs 5.7 lakhs

Boasting of new features, enhanced interior space, added safety features and a new engine lineup, new Maruti WagonR will be offered in three variants of L, V and the new Z. The car has grown in dimensions as compared to its current counterpart, which was first launched in 1999.

It will now stand 3,655mm in length, 1,620mm in width and 1,675mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,435mm and gets ground clearance of 170mm. This is against the older WagonR, which measured 3,636mm in length, 1,475mm in width and 1,670mm in height. Even as dimensions are more than the older WagonR, kerb weight is considerably reduced from 870-965 kgs on the older WagonR to 805-845 kgs on its newest offering, declining by a good 65 kgs. This decrease in weight results from the fact that the new WagonR is based on a Heartect platform.

The exteriors receive new front fascia, a chrome grille, new bumper design and fog lamps. The dual tone interiors also see better equipment with a 7” touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, all four power windows, ORVMs with turn indicators, steering mounted controls and manual AC vents. It also gets a large analog speedometer, which looks much sportier than before. Where safety features are concerned, the new WagonR gains dual airbags, ABS and EBD as standard.

Updates are also seen in the engine lineup. The older WagonR was powered by a single 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder petrol engine offering 67 bhp power and 90 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and AMT. The new WagonR now receives two petrol engine options. In addition to the 1.0 liter engine from current WagonR, it also gets a more powerful 1.2 liter, 4 cylinder petrol engine from Swift. This engine produces 89 bhp power and 113 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual as well as AMT unit.
