New Mercedes Benz S Class makes global debut along with AMG S63, S65, Maybach

The current generation Mercedes S Class which redefined the luxury limousine segment is now up for a mid-life refresh. At the Shanghai Auto Show earlier today, the 2018 version of Mercedes’ flagship has made its world debut.

Along with the facelifted S Class, Mercedes has also revealed the new S 63 AMG, S 65 AMG and the Maybach variants. All S Class variants now come with either six or eight cylinder engine options.

Visual changes are subtle and are aimed at making the car look more sophisticated. The front fascia receives new Multibeam headlamp detailing with three-layer LED running lights. The new arrangement allows permanent usage of high beam without dazzling the oncoming traffic. The bumper has been reprofiled and now carries additional dosage of chrome. The rear end receives slightly revised taillight detailing and bumper with new exhaust finishers. 7 different designs of alloys are on offer, can be chosen from 17 inches to 20 inches.

Inside, the noticeable change is the three-spoke steering wheel which is borrowed from the S Coupe. In addition to this there are two 12.3 inches high resolution displays along with ambient lighting setup. The hi-res displays can now be controlled with hand gestures. All new S Class variants get new keys and keyless ignition start / stop setup.

Diesel variants on offer are S 350d and S 400d respectively generating 286 PS / 600 Nm and 340 PS / 700 Nm. Both are powered by a 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder engine. For petrol, only one variant is on offer S 560 4MATIC. This is powered by a 4.0 liter engine generating 469 hp / 700 Nm. Apart from these, there are two AMG options – AMG 63 and AMG 65 LWB. the former is powered by the same 4.0 liter petrol V8, but generates 612 hp and 900 Nm while the latter is powered by a V12 6.0 liter generating 630 hp and 1,000 Nm (Rear Wheel Drive). All have electronically controlled top speed of 250 kmph. The Mercedes Maybach facelift is also powered by the same 6.0 liter V12.
