2018 Honda Activa rival – New Suzuki Burgman 125 demand growing in India

Suzuki Motorcycle India launched the new Burgman Street 125cc in July with a price tag of Rs 68,000, ex-showroom. Targeting efficient sales in India which the company regards as the most important market globally, more than 10,000 units of the scooter have been dispatched to company showrooms across the country.

Thanks to this, Suzuki Motorcycle India has reported domestic sales growth of 56.6 percent in July 2018. Domestic sales is reported at 53,321 units over 34,038 units in July 2017. Suzuki’s highest-ever monthly-sales comes on the back of new launches.

Sajeev Rajasekharan, EVP, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd. said, “Our commitment to offer world-class product to Indian customers continues with the introduction of Gixxer/SF SP 2018 Series and the launch of the new Burgman Street. We have already completed more than 10000 dispatches for Burgman Street within the first-month. The positive customer sentiments and healthy demand in urban & semi-urban areas have spurred the growth momentum. This augers well for us ahead of the festive season.”

Suzuki Motorcycle India cumulative (Domestic + Exports) sales is reported at 58,805 units at 47.1 percent growth. Cumulative sales for April-July 2018 period amount to 2,28,908 units, up 37.5 percent. In July Suzuki India began dispatches of Burgman Street 125 and new Gixxer/SF SP 2018 Series in Metallic Majestic Gold/Glass Sparkle Black.

Speaking about the all new 2018 Suzuki Burgman Street 125, it is positioned above the Suzuki Access 125. It competes with 2018 Honda Activa 125 in its segment and is targeting a younger segment of buyers in urban India. This maxi scooter boasts of a big and bulky size. It measures 1,880mm in length, 675mm in width and 1,140mm in height. It gets a 1,265mm long wheelbase, ground clearance of 160mm and kerb weight of 108 kgs. It sits on 14” alloy wheels and comes in with a fuel tank of 5.6 liter capacity.

The Suzuki Burgman also shares some of its feature with the Intruder motorcycle, among which, are an all LCD instrument console, exhaust muffler in a new design and an LED headlamp unit. It also receives a multi-function key socket, tubeless tyres and a 12V charging socket. It is seen with 170mm disc brakes in the front and 130mm drum brakes at the rear and telescopic suspension in the front and hydraulic suspension at the rear.

Engine specifications are the same as that seen on the Access 125. This 124c, single cylinder, air cooled engine offers 8.6 bhp power at 7,000 rpm and 10.2 Nm torque at 5,000 rpm offering fuel efficiency to the extent of 53 kmpl.

Suzuki Access 125 is the company’s largest selling two wheeler as on date which contributed 80% to Suzuki’s domestic sales in the last fiscal. In FY19, Suzuki targets sales to the extent of 5 lakh units of this scooter. It remains to be seen how the new Burgman 125 will fare in comparison to the Suzuki Access 125.
