The winners of World Car Award were announced at the 2019 New York International Auto Show. New gen Suzuki Jimny was declared as the 2019 World Urban Car. The winner in this segment was chosen from an initial list of 5 cars from all over the world; which was then shortlisted to 3 finalists which were announced at Geneva on March 5th. These finalists included the Hyundai Santro (made in India), Kia Soul and Suzuki Jimny.
With the Suzuki Jimny being declared as the 2019 World Urban Car, this marks the third consecutive year that a Suzuki car has been in a Top Three in the World finalist. This year also saw the Jimny in the top three finalist list in the World Car Design of the Year category.
The cars are chosen and voted by an international jury that consists of 86 automotive journalists from 24 countries. Each of these jurors is appointed by World Steering Committee and the international accounting firm KPMG tabulates jurors ballots.
Suzuki Jimny is a capable off roader. It has catered to the demands of buyers both in terms of design and performance and is equally adept in its performance both on and off the road. It has been sold out for months, and waiting period in most countries has crossed 6 months.
The Suzuki Jimny compact 4×4 is priced at £15,499 ($20,218 / €17,889 / INR 14,03,533). It is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5 liter engine offering 100 hp power and 130 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual or optional 4 speed automatic transmission.
The Suuzki Jimny is also one of the most anticipated car launch in India. It is reported to be launched in the country by Maruti Suzuki India Limited; and expected to be priced between Rs.10-12 lakhs. The Suzuki Jimny used to sell in India under the Gypsy moniker and was recently axed from the company lineup.
