With the Brezza based Urban Cruiser discontinued, Toyota does not have a sub 4 meter SUV / crossover on offer anymore
Sub 4m SUV is an important segment. Currently leading this segment are the likes of Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, etc. Based on the Brezza, Toyota had launched the Urban Cruiser. But that has been discontinued.
Reason behind Toyota discontinuing Urban Cruiser are not clear. It was doing well in sales, registering about 3-4k units a month. Not only Toyota has discontinued Urban Cruiser, they have handed the name of their Brezza based sub 4m SUV to their compact SUV – Urban Cruiser HyRyder, which rivals Creta and Seltos. This leaves a gap in Toyota’s lineup, which is likely to be filled with a new sub 4m SUV coupe based on the Maruti Fronx.
Toyota Fronx SUV Could Be Called Taisor
Fronx made its global debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in Jan this year. It will be launched later this month. Maruti Fronx is a paradigm shift where Indian car designs are concerned. Maruti signifies this very aspect in its advert depicting every other vehicle as a tin box on wheels. It is one handsome machine which screams youthfulness and excitement.
Based on the Fronx, Toyota is likely to launch their own version. Toyota has trademarked the name Taisor in India. Toyota Taisor will come with a new design, and will not be a rebadge exercise like we have seen with Baleno / Glanza. Based on Toyota’s modern design language, automotive rendering artist Pratyush Rout has created the Toyota Fronx version.
Toyota Prius’ design is immediately evident in the headlight and alloys. The headlights house 4 rectangular projectors with C-shaped LED elements engulfing them. A larger C-shaped LED DRL covers the whole headlight assembly. These look a lot better than the ones present on Maruti Fronx with its Nexa-specific ice-cube effect DRLs. Wheels have a 5-spoke pattern with interesting design elements.
Front grille is typical of Toyota with its angry and aggressive hexagonal opening. Lower half of the front bumpers are black plastic and help reduce visual bulk. A faux skid plate along with LED fog lamps are housed here. The cuts rising from the lower bumper are reminiscent of Toyota 4Runner.
Toyota Taisor SUV – Specs & Features
Toyota Taisor will get a 9 inch infotainment touchscreen, Arkamys sound system and connected car technology with 40+ connectivity features along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It will also sport wireless phone charger, head up display unit, push button start, cruise control, rear AC vents and keyless entry.
A 360 degree view camera, reverse parking sensor, turn indicators on wing mirrors and electrically adjustable mirrors are also a part of the on board equipment. Toyota Taisor will share engine options with Maruti Fronx. These will include a 1.0 liter turbo-petrol engine offering 99 hp power and 147 Nm torque. The 1.2 liter NA petrol engine will make 89 hp power and 113 Nm torque. Expect launch to take place in the coming months. Prices of Toyota Taisor could be a bit higher than Maruti Fronx.
