Next gen Chevrolet Beat for India will not be based on the new international-spec car’s M2 platform as it’s deemed to be too expensive for the price sensitive Indian market. Instead, the next gen Indian model is likely to be a heavily upgraded version of the existing car with comprehensive exterior and interior changes.
Though the current Beat’s M300 platform would be retained, several bits will be derived from the new international version, reports Autocar India. GM India is expected to work on increasing the localization of the product to achieve a competitive price point. Since India is likely to be the company’s small car export hub for emerging markets, new Beat should benefit from economies of scale.
Powering the next gen Chevrolet Beat could be a downsized 1.0-litre EcoTec petrol engine and an improved version of the existing 1.0-litre SDE diesel motor which is exclusive for India. Launch is likely to be slated for 2017.
Meanwhile, PTI reports that GM India will hike the prices across its existing product portfolio with effect from July 2015. The hike would be in the range of 1-2% depending on the model and would be aimed at offsetting added cost pressure due to foreign exchange fluctuations.
